Post by: Pincho on June 27, 2009, 04:37:46 pm
I need a tutorial on how to texture a planet without the ends squashing up.

Thanks!

I am creating Alien Planets for a computer game, I will not be able to find a texture that is already made. I need to figure out how to bend my image to the right shape to fit a sphere.

First find a suitable texture of planet earth, put it on a sphere to check if it works.
If it does open earth in photoshop, add a new layer and paint your new planet to match the underlying earth. That should work.

Thanks, but you didn't show me how you made the texture. But I have now found a Photoshop Filter that automatically fixes textures so that they will wrap around a sphere.

You wanted to be shown how to use Photoshop???

Really the texture is just a 1024 x 1024 jpg  nothing more than that,
Anim8or will map it onto the sphere for you using the uvmapper tool.

Well you need spherical mapping correction when used for Sphere's, and you need to make a special texture usually so that the ends are not pinched. Even if Anim8or does automatically fix the texture, I don't know if Anim8or can export the fixed texture afterwards. But being as I need the planet for a game, I need the texture, and planet exported separately.
