Title: Microphone
Post by: $imon on May 23, 2009, 08:08:31 am
Something I made yesterday, modeled & rendered in anim8or of course.

the modeling took about 4 hours, but rendering was easily 5 times that haha!

Composition of several passes in Photoshop.

Let me know if you like it. I kindof feel like doing a bit more with it than just the plain image, so if you know something that would look good, dont hesitate !

Looking really good simon! The details are great. So are the textures. It only has a bit of a low AA sample, you can still easily spot the jagged edges ;).
But that doesn't takes away the looks!

heh thanks... I rendered the image with 225 samples, and the other passes with 64 samples.. they dont look too jagged seperately, but when i combine it in photoshop the jagged edges really come out.. I think it is unfortunately unavoidable!

A small blur brush could remove the edge a bit. But you might overdo it and get really blurry edges.

Simon it is absolutely amazing what you can make with anim8or!

How did you go about making this?

Awesome work.

If ya wanna do anything else with it... i'd say turn it into a poster for an event or something.
Even if it's just to feel satisfied that it's complete :P
Love it

That looks really nice!
I agree with visible jagged edges. You could render image twice (or three times) as big with MUCH lower sampling, composite it in full size and then resize to half size (or three times smaller). I think that would solve your problem!

looks really great.

you could use gimp it has an antialiasing filter that should do it.

Nice, simon!

I don't notice the edges being jagged...

Yeah, I think the render would look great for a book cover! Or something, album cover, etc.
Nice,

The render is from the program - You could set the AA to 10000 and get the same. But anyway - AWESOME!

One way to make the jaggies less obvious is to animate the image (like looking through a flywire mesh or screen door, if you move your head a bit the vista beyond the screen is far easier to make out than if you keep still).  With such an amazing model (and it is amazing Simon... seriously) a simple fly-past animation of a few seconds, with the camera pointing at the microphone the whole time, would look awesome.  Of course, with ART's almost-as-fast-as-continental-drift speed you would probably have to reduce the number of passes and be content with a less sumptuous image, unless you are prepared to be rendering for months!

Wait, I haven't commented on this yet?
As always, beautiful!
I'm always amazed at how you turn out such great renders.  Do you play with the renders a lot until you get it just right?  Perhaps I just don't have the patience.
Great job all around

I understood that it's not straight render but 4 passes composition. Sometimes antialiasing final product is more effective than compositing single antialiased passes. But it might be only my personal experience.
I wouldn't have courage to render anything with 10000 AA samples :D

Fine work as always. As for doing a bit more, you could put a little rodent on top looking for its 15 minutes of glory   ;D

Thanks guys!

RnDr FOX: What exactly would you like to know about making it? Maybe I can answer your question a bit better then..

3D Joe Wiltshire: Thats a good idea, I might do that..

dwsel: That is exactly what I did for the following render, though in total it took about 75 hours in total!

ENSONIQ5; haha yea an animation would take a year to render with this.. I'm afraid I don't have the patience for that :(

hihosilver; I don't play around with the render too much, but I do play around with the different layers in photoshop a bit afterward to get the exact contrast etc. that i want.

dwsel; Ive rendered something with 625 passes in the past.. but it was still grainy .. it took a looong time though haha!

lynn22; a rodent? hahaha.. that is a funny idea.. did you just see ratatouille? ;)

Heres the latest render.. I rendered it out at 1200x1400 pixels. that took 70 hours.. but i got rid of the jagged edges that way!

Did you create your own textures or did you use anim8or's inbuilt texture tool? It looks really nice by the way.

Thanks guys!

Bobert: I used anim8or materials for everything.

RnDr FOX, heres an image with the wireframe and the material (with a glossy attribute)

It's a lot quicker to use photoshop adjustments than to adjust an anim8or scene light a little and then start a new render.

Impressive image, $imon  :)
