Title: New Computer
Post by: Ratticis on April 28, 2009, 04:52:16 pm
I plan on buying a new computer sometime in the near future. What I'm wondering is what I should be looking at to make my life easier in tearms of rendering, animating, and overall smoothness using programs such as Anim8or. Right now I've done a bit of modeling but would like to start some actual movies. Right now rendering 3 seconds of video takes up to 2 hours!  >:(

Most 3D modeling and renering programs right now rely solely on CPU power and speed for rendering images.  So, the faster the processor the better.  If you have a program that can make use of multiple --- dual-, quad-, or X-core processors (which Anim8or does not, so far) --- render times go down some more.  And some programs support using render "farms," multiple computers with multi-core processors.  And be sure to get enough memory to accommodate the polygon complexity you're after.

On the flip-side, some programs are looking into harnessing the processing capability of the newer Graphic Processor Units (GPU) on high-end graphics cards.  So, in a way, it kind of depends on the type of work you want to do (low- or high-poly), and whether you intend to stay with Anim8or, or migrate to Blender, LightWave, 3D Max, or higher-end programs.

I agree 100% with RudySchneider.  You should have at least 2GB free RAM for complex jobs in Anim8or, and although the GPU is not utilised for rendering it does have an impact on how your models look on the screen while working on them.  I guess the rule of thumb, as with anything, is get the best machine you can afford, with an emphasis on RAM and CPU speed.
