Title: Modelling a City
Post by: mysterysmith on March 28, 2009, 11:50:09 pm
You've been really helpful with my project thus far so i really really thank you! But I have yet another problem. I need to model a night city and I cant seem to find any textures, the models are really boring and I dont have much time to make heaps of models really interesting, so I was just wondering if you guys knew of a place where I can download textures or models for free, or even a random city generator or something.

Thanks in advance :D

google it if you want free models. If you want to know how to model a  fast basic city, just draw out a city with an aerial view (top of the earth looking down to the grown). Then just draw how your streets will look and where your buildings will be. (Draw different shapes for the buildings, not just a plain box). Scan your drawing in the computer and trace around the difference shapes to make the land and the buildings (Make them seperate objects). Fill the holes in the different objects  and select all the faces( Except the faces that makes up the street), and extrude the faces until the buildings are the height that you want off the ground. Texture the buildings any way you want and presto! you have a model of a city.

if you don't want to draw anything before hand, just use google map to get an aerial view of a city.

Unless you want to only use Anim8or, you can use this Blender script:
http://www.blendernation.com/2009/03/27/two-cool-object-generator-scripts/

Well, that's actually the video but there's a link to that script there.

Have you ever seen SimCity 4? I originally got involved with 3D modeling because I was interested in making custom models of structures for SimCity 4... using a freeware program called gmax (www.turbosquid.com)... gmax is a lot like 3ds-max, but without the animation and such features... strictly "still models".

A couple of the SimCity 4 fan forums:

http://www.simtropolis.com/  Featured a project where the members worked together to create an entire SimCity 4 mod with Mars for its theme.

the methods above are great but here are a few more

1-get an image of a city from lioke google maps or so and open it up in a image editor then play around with the contraST AND stuff and make it grayscale then you can use terranim8ors hieght map terrian generator

2-use a greeble plug-in for a 3d app i know that there is one for 3ds max but niot sure what else

3-another is to clone and align several differnet building meshs usiong some  plugins for anim8or
