Title: Textures
Post by: Airedale11 on March 24, 2009, 02:12:51 pm
I'm trying to get a texture on an object to change to another texture in scene mode. What I mean is Picture A to Picture B

Ensoniq5 made something like that for this movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=AU&hl=en-GB&v=iHKdne-GZa4
I believe he made a different planes with the different faces. He places them in front of the character and turned them on and off using visabilty.

My mom says I'm not allowed to watch videos on the internet because they use too much megabytes so I can't watch that.

There is a picture of it up here: http://anim8or.com/youtube/index.html (second one)

I don't understand it by looking at a picture...

You wont understand from the video either. He create a simple character: a box without a face. He made several planes, with facial textures on them (like the two you have).
I scene mode he changed the visability of those planes to switch from one texture to the other.

Maybe PM ensoniq for more information.

I believe that Terranim8or is able to do this. You set your scene up, save it, then open it in Terranim8or, where you can apply the animated texture. Save it, then open it up again in Anim8or.

I don't have Terranim8or.

Terranim8or can be downloaded here - http://www.biederman.net/leslie/terranim8or/instructions.htm

at the very bottom under "Conditions of Use"

Nice face textures Airedale11!  The way I animated the face textures for the eraser video was to create a series of flat planes, each with a different facial expression material applied.  All of these planes were brought into scene mode and placed such that they all occupy the same physical space, slightly above the blank-faced eraser.  In frame 1 of the animation, the "Visibility" parameter of each plane is set to off, or "0", except for the one which is the face that will be seen, whose visibility is set to "1".  Through the animation, the facial expressions can be changed by switching the visibility of each plane off and on.

The only other thing I did was to use transparency maps to make the planes mostly transparent, except for the solid black facial features.  This way I did not have to carefully match the colour of the face plane to the colour of the underlying object (in my case the eraser).  Also, be sure to check that the planes are not casting shadows, or it will be obvious that the expression plane is slightly above the object beneath.

This method works for characters with very flat faces.  For more 3 dimensional characters it might be easier to have a set of complete heads, each with a different facial expression, but still animated using the visibility function in the same way.  Note that this method is limited in that the expressions do not morph from one to the other, but change instantly, which is fine for a cartoon-like project but probably not so good for a more realistic look.

OK I don't understand so well about how to activate visibility and where to find it but thanks for your advice. I just quickly made the faces for the thread, I have slightly more advanced faces for the character I'm making.

Visabilty: double click on a object in scene mode> other animated properties. There it says 'visible'. When clicking on the three dots behind it you can animate the visabilty of the object: 1=visible, 0=invisible.

This method can work to for more advanced faces which are not flat. Just copy the head of the character, cut out the facial part (no need for the back of the head etc) and give it the different facial expression. Now use this second object instead of the plane.

Ooops I accidentally made an object (the happy face) Invisible for the whole scene. How do I make it visible again?

At the bottom of the scene, there will be a little box with scene01 written, beside it there be a
Mate, nearly every question you've asked could have been easily answered by the manual, it would take you so much less time than posting on the forum and would save Steve some bandwidth as well.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, Airedale11, but there certainly can be stupid answers.  This forum exists to share information about Anim8or, and it is the correct place to ask questions.  However, I would strongly recommend reading through the manual, and have it open while you are working as a reference.  It does have answers to most of the questions you are likely to have in the early stages of your experience with Anim8or, and where it fails to help you this forum will always be here.

I would also recommend trying the tutorials at the left of this screen, if you haven't already.  The last one, "A simple walk cycle", deals with animation, and should provide you with a fairly solid understanding of the concepts and methods involved with creating animation with Anim8or.  With that basic knowledge you will find it much easier to expand into creative projects of your own.

Well, yes, basically what ENSONIQ5 said, and BTW, I'm wasn't trying to insult you in any way, just giving you some advice :D
