Title: Object rigging
Post by: Airedale11 on March 18, 2009, 01:16:17 pm
I tried to rig (make into a figure) a single object but it comes out looking like gum in the sequence editor... I did read the manual (twice) but it didn't help.

EDIT: Heres the object I'm trying to rig...

If you add the the file which you rigged we might help you and see what you did wrong. Now you have only added the character model, we can't really help you this way. When you follow the manual exactly there shouldn't be a problem.
Maybe try this tutorial:  A simple walk (http://anim8or.com/tutorials/simplewalk/index.html). Which explains basic rigging.

I did try the "A simple walk tutorial" but that's for a figure with multiple objects.

The basics stay the same. Only now you have to apply the character to a origin bone and use skinning (http://anim8or.com/manual/5_figure_editor.html#skinning) to attach the object to the right bones.

OK so look at this one and tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Well you didn't do anything wrong, since you didn't do anything. You first have to attach the bones to the object using skinning (link above). Now you have only make two bones.

Now, using the skinning tool, you need to change the envelopes so that they enclose the entire area of the mesh that you want the bone to influence.  Currently they are not surrounding any vertices, and therefore are not influencing any vertices.

You can find step by step guides for bones and skinning here (http://www.3d-anim8.com/tutorials/tutorial.asp)

This is really frustrating! I wanted to use my character in a scene and I corrected everything in the figure editor and I made a walk sequence too, but then... THE PROGRAM HAD AN ERROR AND I DIDNT EVEN GET TO SAVE IT!!!

It is frustrating. Just make sure that under File > Configure you have Autosave checked and have specified a directory where to autosave to, then at least you won't lose everything.
