Title: Elf/Leopard/Eagle/Steam Punk/X-wing/Halls of Fury WIP
Post by: headwax on March 03, 2009, 10:44:21 pm
WIP

First up the gnome. I think I will make a book cover eventually using these meshes....

I started baseing him on a garden gnome I found in the....... garden, but I have tried to give him more of a mischievious face. Bit of assymtery. Might fix up the outside part of his right eye (left side of image) to make it more almond shaped, base of right ear, nasal corners, don't know whether his nose should be less stumpy....Certainly will add a bumpmap to bring out some fine work. The tongue is somewhere else...

The hat is a holding mesh till I work one up.

Model and render anim8or .96.

C and c welcome.

Good work.   Only crit at this point is I feel the face texture has gone awry.  Eyes have come out really nice.

Thanks for replying Indian8or,

Forgot to mention I am going for the patinated look, like he has been sitting in the garden for fourty years :)

Heres the texture sans bump.

Your model is ugly and I hate it already (compliment ;D)

The only problem I see with it is a few tri's and 5-sided polys that could easily be fixed up.
Title: Re: Gnome/Elf WIP
Post by: headwax on March 06, 2009, 01:59:53 am
Thanks Tanzim :) I hate it too heh.

Yep, I had a few tris and then I exported as an obj so I could do some three d painting with blacksmith.

When I bought it back into anim8or there were a few missing  polys and a couple of tris and 5 sided polys added.

I think I might have screwed it up when I was mucking around in UVmapper to try and relax the polys to fix some stretching.

Workflow was anim8or>uvmapper>blacksmith>anim8or

Blacksmith is a good free 3d paint program if you  ever need one.

Not sure, but most of them are fixed now.

Thanks for being observant.!

cheers

Tonight's update:

Mesh almost finished and ready for texturing.

Fingers spread wide to make rigging easier.

Might put a leather jerkin around his chest?

Its coming along good, nice ugly face there :)
i cant really suggest any improvements at the moment as it is very ugly (the way its supposed to be), so the face is all deformed.

Might put a leather jerkin around his chest
Gangster Gnome? ;D

EDIT: Edited for spelling mistake

i cant cope with his mush either........ I can see the asymetrical style working though
it does give him a visual power,a slightly unerving character.
just twittering on .....it's beyond better than good .

Post by: headwax on March 06, 2009, 09:30:19 pm
Thanks very much for your comments Spicy and Captaindrewi.

It's amazing what a set of realistic eyes will do for a character as far as "alivening" them up.

Todays work, started texturing the hands. The suggestion of knuckles and tendons is via bumpmapping. In the second pic, photoshopping gives a slight blur to the furthest hand adding a little distance.

Texturing finished.

Going to try rigging the hands seperately and making them a child of the main figure.

I'll keep the thread locked so I don't keep checking back :)

started on his 'ride' today,

hard to get good anatomy shots of a leopard's legs

have only uv mapped the head so the textures on the body are stretched
Title: Re: Gnome/Elf WIP
Post by: headwax on March 18, 2009, 03:10:17 am
fixed up the feet, made the head bigger, addede some anatomical sugestions, knifed the joints so they will bend properly, spent an afternoon textureing the devil, now I have a leaopard that looks like a boxer dog with measles,

have to make the face more feline and adds some teeth, claws and a saddle.

designing the lighting terrain and fog

will pose the leopard and add texture, add crows and redo the whickers at higher res
Title: Re: Gnome/Elf WIP
Post by: headwax on March 23, 2009, 04:17:22 am
Well I've rigged the le0pard (still can't spell it) added a few crows, redone the transmaps for the whiskers, adjusted the lighting, fiddled with the fingers, adjusted the postion of the main figures to be diagonal, added a few more lights. I wanted more grass but my comp keeps crashing,,, heh.

All the uv maps are 2048 by 2048 so I can get in nice and close for further work if nesccesary

Programmes used so far: anim8or for all the models and the basic texturing, uv mapper pro (thanks Raxx), blacksmith 3d paint to paint over the joins that I screwed up, carrara for the renders and the rigging, photoshop for a few adjustments.

I've done two renders and am leaning towards the motion render...

I'd like to adda bit of dust and flying particles I think at the leopard's feet

I guess I'm nearly finished these particular scene... so any c and c would be welcome at this point!

Nice work headwax, i like the evil little evil. The textures are good quality!
The motion blur still needs some work imo, it's to much blur. Try keeping it soft and maybe a slight DOF.
The grass could use some work to: try more and small straws.

Keep it going, this is going to be a nice piece of work.

Post by: spicy on March 23, 2009, 12:45:51 pm
I like the cat you got there! It reminds me of Oblivion, nice terrian to. I also like the eagle in the background as well. Keep up the good work. :)
Title: Re: Gnome/Elf WIP
Post by: headwax on March 23, 2009, 09:56:37 pm
Thanks Floyd and Spicy for commenting.

Floyd: I agree with the motion blur being too extreme. I think just a little around the paws of the cat to make it seem like fast motion. At the moment it looks like a bad dream.

Also the dof is a good idea - should concentrate the viewer's attention on the foreground and add a sense of depth.

Spicy: I'll check oblivion. Looks interesting :) A more eagle like eagle is a great idea. Maybe I can fit him into the foreground as well....

I have a vague idea I'll turn this into a pseudo book cover: "Invasion of The Elven Lords" or similar.

anyone think the elve's left arm (on our right) is a bit weird, not straight enough perhaps?

thanks again

edit I can see where I have left a straight edge at top right with messy transmapping  that needs to be removed.
Title: Re: Elf/Leopard/Eagle WIP
Post by: headwax on March 26, 2009, 11:31:52 pm
Spicy gave me the idea of including an eagle so I started on him a few days ago...

First image, I identified all the parts of the mesh with different materials to make it easier to unwrap in UV mapper pro (thanks Raxx :) )
Title: Re: Elf/Leopard/Eagle WIP
Post by: headwax on March 26, 2009, 11:36:00 pm
He has a ridge down his sternum from extrapolating the head mesh and keeping the lines too close to each other so I'd better fix that ....

The texturing on the toes is a bit rough but maybe I can get away with it, and the join at the neck between the neck feathers and the chest feathers is a bit straight. Eventually I might add a transmap to add more feathering to the tail and wing edges....
Title: Re: Elf/Leopard/Eagle WIP
Post by: headwax on March 26, 2009, 11:38:12 pm
and he needs a bit of feathering around that straight edg at his beak !

Here he is in situ...

Post by: Raxx on March 26, 2009, 11:52:40 pm
Very interesting! And a very freaky gnome/elf :) I think it's coming along nicely though I can't say for sure since your imagination is always so...imaginative. Your avatar must be the face you make while you're thinking these things up ;)

I actually prefer the first render angle you made where the gnomely elf rider and leopard are facing the camera. Perhaps you should raise the arms up a little more as well so that he's sighting down the bow a bit better and it looks more realistic (in a sense...).

Hey headwax, where do you get the time to model all this, or alternatively, how do you model so fast? It's incredible really.
On your eagle model: on the legs, there's 6 edges connecting to one point, and it's making the shading come out weird (that or the UV Mapping came out wrong), and I would really recommend fixing it :) And keep up the good work.

3D Beast: Mate, perhaps you haven't read the Forum Rules, http://www.anim8or.com/smf/index.php?topic=2086.0, could you keep you posts more relevant next time? Spamming is not tolerated.

Hey :) Sorry to be away so long  8) Been packing up an art exhibition we just had...

I'll post the review when I find it.....

Raxx: that's funny about my face, that third eye just grew a few years ago, I woke up one morning, and my wife was looking at me a bit oddly..... Thanks for the advice about the arm! And it's interesting that you prefer the first angle (thanks for the opinion), so I will revisit that! I can see your point about having the elf face the camera. Gives a POV to the viewer....

Thanks  Spicy: I've made a few birds ( so to speak) and a transmap mostly softens the hard edges and makes it look more 'realistic'.... I hope :)

Time, well I get into a lot of trouble for spending my day at the computer,,, but I enjoy it. The models come out fast mind you, as anim8or is so well designed! Thanks for the point about the verticies ... 6 edges joining to one. I have problems coming down from a detailed part of a mesh (like a finger/hand, then joiningg it up with eg the wrist, as one part of the mesh needs a lot more detail than the next. Appreciate any advice on this anyone....

Falloffalot: thanks I appreciate your kind comment. ;D

What you want here is different methods to terminate edge loops.  A great example of what I mean is here (the comparison of the two spheres partway down the page.)
http://maxrovat.sns.hu/subdiv/subdivmodeling.htm (http://maxrovat.sns.hu/subdiv/subdivmodeling.htm)
As you can see there are particular patterns you can use to help change the direction of edge loops.
Here's another good method: http://www.astahost.com/Edgeloop-Termination-t19219.html (http://www.astahost.com/Edgeloop-Termination-t19219.html)
(for that method you can skip steps 3-5 and simply merge the two triangular faces created to get a result as in step 6.)
Basically the last method turns a loop around, circling back into another one.
I hope that helps!

well a while ago i signed up for a learning contest at carrara louge, the idea was to illustrate the idea "Seven". So I put up my entry as something to do with Snow White. I can't remember the rules but the idea is to learn how to use some aspect of carrara and show that you have learnt something....

today I tried to polish up my image. I rendered the trident and the sign on an alpha background, then pasted them into the main render via photoshop, erasing bits and bobs to make them sit better and then adding a few shadows. The beard is plastered onto a sphere which is inside the elf's head.

in phot0shop I copied some of his leather jacket and applied the copy over the shoes on the ground, then made the layer a multiply layer, then dropped the opacity till some of the original shoes showed through

the forest of course is a textured applied to a plane or two, the leaves are transmaps over a gridded plane which I bent at random angles...

I think this will be my entry....

software: blacksmith 3d paint , anim8or, carrara, photoshop, uvmapper pro, I sourced a BVH file of someone sitting on a high chair, filtered it through truspace, then bent the skeleton to fit my elf, then spent an hour tweaking the hands, legs and arms etc because the BVh file went nutty :)

edit: just figured how to do a depth pass then combine it with an adjustment layer mask in photoshop, so the second image has a slight DOF

any c and c appreciated between the two images

well now, ,,,

I started working on some paraphenalia to flesh out the character...

I tool me about three hours to texture this book, maybe I am getting anal

I used a table found in king tut's tomb for my inspiration, now making the bookshelf etc,,

anim8or meshes of course, uvmapper pro , a few adjustments like the centre of the candle flames and the shadow under the pipe were made in photoshop elements, alos  I erased one of the leopard's feet cause I stuffed the pose up :)

the scene has about seven lights, I tried to make all the objects overlap in one way to add depth to the render.... the metal things on the cabinet are transmaps on cyls

rocks made with that excellent rock plugin, thankyou who ever made it!

using depth passs

Here is what I discovered for photoshop elements 3 but should work in six

via Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels

1) place this adjustment layer mask between the two layers  you want to combine

2) select the top layer (in this case the layer you have blurred which is a blurred copy of the background layer) and hit ctrl g, this will attach it to the layer mask

3) click on the layer mask and do alt click, this will hide everything except the layer mask, then you can paste whatever into it!

4) Open up your depth channel pass in a seperate document, select all, copy it, then go back to the first document and paste it into layer mask...

5) I think you then click on another layer in the layers windows at bottom right and you will see the result

6) Adjust effect by varying the opacity of the adjustment layer (?)

Thanks very much 3dJoe, Onespirit and Jehovahenker :)

I was waiting till I had some more work to post before I replied ... but its on the home computer.

Hah, I admit for a troll he is a little too human, but I tried to ugly him up so he could be my live in maid ....

Well perhaps live in bodyguard.

I checked out a lot of Norwegian troll pics before I did him, but made him from memory.

As far as animation, I made a small walk one last night for fun, that I'll post, So you can see his body moving.

But these characters will go in a book if I can keep my motivation long enough. So I am aiming for a certain feeling in the renders, kind of old fashioned and less CG maybe.

That might come with post work?

thanks again

well I made the body, rigged the troll and have come up with something untrollike hah!

That's okay.

Here's some renders, the unadulterated one, the photoshopped one using the depth pass and a moon addede

then a slight pastel effect

anim8or mesh, carrara renders, photoshop photoshopping

not happy with the fish in the hand, the eyes on the trolll realling aren;t clear enough, must fix the face textures to reduce the variance in tone

c and c welcome

have worked up a stone bridge which I was hoping would go with the render eventually, trolls living under bridges....

Wow thats one ugly troll haha!

Maybe the fish could be a bit more shiny? and a scales bumpmap too maybe.

I agree about the eyes as well, the light would give a highlight on his eyes.

The design is really cool, I love the big waist and the creepy feet.

I think the water could use some improvement, maybe more reflective and a bump/normal map?

Nice scenes in here, like the colors and the lighting!

Hya $imon

Ahh yes, you are very observant, thankyou!. the water is, indeed, unwater like. I have been meaning to jump in the deep end and do a customised bump map around the stepping stones etc... or where the fish break the surface in oneof those olde renders.

I think doing a bumpmap amd using that as the spec/reflection map, then inverting it for the transparent map would really make a difference - assuming that where the transparency is greatest the reflection will be least!

The fish is almost cardboard cut out, which is bad. She/he does need to be more shiny in parts as it has been dragged from the water - good point! A few drips of water might help!

Thanks again. I value your input. :)

Renders from a different angle. gottooo fix that gap between the waist and the belt at the back - pure render and slight photoshopping :0

locked for a while cause am off line.

see you soon :)

http://www.dxstudio.com/guide_content.aspx?id=740d5b31-96a3-4ea4-b8dd-3070944383f5

I have a feeling it should be reversed to be used on theactual alpa map!

one on compositing using hotoshop

grass tutorial http://gallery.realistic-design.com/tutorial/Grass_tutorial.pdf

great tut for flags in photoshop but this would be good for simulating creases on characters' clothes

not that i intend to make jewellery but

http://www.tutzor.com/index.php/2008/09/gold-jewelry-design/

good for ading details where it's needed

surfacing a spac vehicle

don't know about the texture strectching but the photoshop stuff is good for panels and rivets etc

some nudity sort of, and off the floor walking (i'll put some stepping stones in)

something silly for the knights challenge on animanon, bit of silly walking for the knights who say ni. Not my humans, they will be removed and replaced by armour.

armour by anim8or, renders by carrara, hair by stepfan :) BVH by poser.

EDIt soemthing silly, the real knights who say "Ni"

&NR=1
