Title: Breaking apart .obj Objects (solved)
Post by: Tohron on January 27, 2008, 11:27:19 am
Hello, something I'm trying to do with Anim8tor is import and texture a number of .obj objects.  However, I want to texture different parts of the object seperately, but all the parts of the object seem to be stuck together in one giant group (I hit ungroup, but it doesn't do anything).  The only way I can see to get around this is to convert the entire thing into a giant mesh, but then it's still near-impossible to texture it properly because of the apparent limits in Anim8tor's selection abilities (I can't find a way to add or remove things from selections).

Does anyone know of a way to solve this?

nobody seems to want to reply to you Tohron... so I will ...
try going into face mode select the faces of the part you are trying to disconnect, then  edit/Detach faces or keystroke Shift D

then move them out

I'm not sure you understand what I want to do - I just want a way to texture areas of the model seperately, without having to individually select every single face everytime I want to make a change.  I don't want to literally break the object apart.

The obj. object is made up of a bunch of basic shapes with no connected geometry - is there a way to divide the object up into its component shapes? (Ungroup doesn't seem to work)

If not, are there at least a way to add or remove things from a selection?

Thanks, that did help, but is there a way to select all polygons that are connected to each other in one click?

When a face(s) are selected, you can either go "edit>select>Grow face selection" or simply press "shift+g" to grow the face selection.

Thanks!  That works fine!
