I don't know of any tutorials but if you google for ship models (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ship%2Bmodels&btnG=Search) you will find plenty of sites for reference images.

At this site (http://www.the-blueprints.com/index.php?blueprints/) you can find alot of blueprints of ships and other vehicles. I don't know if they have pirate ships, but probably ships that look alike (sailboats etc.). You can use those blueprints to create a ship using edgeloops.

Since you've only had one post, you must be new.  In answer to your question, there is no "EASY" button for any 3D modeling or animation software.  It is possible, however, to do some very interesting things with Anim8or, provided you practice and take the time to learn the basics.

I suggest you start by reading the manual and doing the tutorials.  Then, prowl around the forums to see what others are doing, and participate in information exchanges.  Have some fun experimenting on your own to see how things work and what you can do with a bit of imagination.

i think you may need Terranim8or or some third party program to use effects. if you're using 0.97d, you might be able to use the ART raytracer to some effect, but that would involve making the effect objects.
