Title: Headphones
Post by: hihosilver on January 26, 2008, 02:05:58 am
Modeled this in about 28 min. as a challenge between myself and two other anim8or users at the anim8or.org site.
It looks like I'll be getting second place though  :P
Tell me what you think!

Thanks colclough,
The image was rendered in anim8or of course! ;)
It was done with one local light and two infinite lights, all casting monte carlo shadows.

It looks great!

$imon's was awesome also. :D

By the way, how exactly did you model the headphones? What technique did you use?

Thanks :)

I started with each earpiece.  To do that, I used the "sphereinder" plugin which basically makes a pill shape.  I then cut deleted all the vertices except one ring going flat around it.  I filled that figure, and used the shell tool then basically only used extrude and resize a lot.  After that I put in the little hole manually by detaching the face of the headphone, copying that object, then undoing the detachment.  I then pasted the object, resized it and rotated it, then joined the solids and manually used the add-edge tool to attach the two objects (the bridge command didn't work properly.)  To do the headband I basically used the same method except with a sphere, and deleted some points, then shelled.  Then I did some extrusions.

Hope that's what you were looking for ;)

Yeah thanks!

You make it sound so easy, which it probably is (a bit), it's just that you can think of how to do it, which I can't. I tried to make some headphones similar to yours earlier and they came out as total crap. Thanks for explaining how you modeled it, it has spawned a few ideas from me... :D

28 minutes?I haven't used anim8or in a bit as fifty percent of users know as im in blender but awesome! That's a amazing model!See before i came into 3d i thought al you did was take a little brush and paint up a model which i lately realised 3dbrush does though i dunno where to buy it:D

No problem kingku ;)  It does take some time to learn different methods, though sometimes you need to improvise like here.

Thanks anim8orblenderman!  I had no idea what I was getting into with 3d, I just knew I'd love it.

As a side note, the render wasn't showing up for me, so I re-uploaded it.  So if there wasn't a fully shadowed render before, it's up now :)

Since the ART renderer came out, I thought I'd give it a test on an actual full model.
I don't fully like how this came out, I'm going to render this again, as I want the scene a bit brighter and all.  Still, I feel this renderer improves anim8or a TON.
Tell me what you think  ;)

Great model and render!  The way you reinforced the hard edges looks great!

I prefer the first render (gray) it's so life like it could be a photo of the real thing.
Wonderful.

Thanks SirBonovox
Thanks lynn22, I like the shadows best in the first one.  For some reason with the ART renderer I can't really reproduce the shadows as in that one.  I need to learn to use the new shadow attributes, and get rid of the intense grain.
Here's two more render, tell me what you think!

I don't know, maybe it's your use of color in the new pics but I still like the first one (gray) best

I see what you mean lynn, I think it may be the shadows.  In the newer renders my shadows are very dark and grainy and I don't like that as much.  I may try to change that, but I'm moving on projects as well.
Thanks phantom king :)
