i have joined solids before going to build>join solids after selecting two meshed but does this not work with subdivided object. i have ried join solids on two subdivided objects but nothing happens. if this is so can i unsubdivide objects

Yes you can't join subdivided meshes. You can get rid of the subdivision by adding a modifier to the object, selecting both the modifier and the subdivision, then "build>modifiers>bind" and finally "build>modifiers>effect". Of course take care not to modify the mesh with the modifier, leave them separated when you bind them together, just to be sure. I've been told that there is another way to do the same thing by messing with the subdivision parameters, but I couldn't succeed. Using modifiers anyway works, you can use them.

The other way to remove subdivision and return a mesh to its pre-subdivided state is to double click on the subdivision to bring up the dialog box, and change the two numbers at the bottom of the window to "0" and "1" respectively (or the other way around... I don't have Anim8or at work where I am typing this so I can't check). This should make the subdivided object appear the way it did before subdividing, but you must Build>Convert to Mesh to remove the subdivision.
Edit: I didn't know about that method Francesco... worth remembering!

You're welcome. Also you see, I've learnt a new thing - I knew the params but missed the convert to mesh part, thanks for the completion Ensoniq5
