Title: Box modelling tutorial
Post by: nextmastermind on November 23, 2008, 10:23:17 pm
Noob question. I know to box model I need 2 reference images and what tool to use. But it won't let me fill in a lot of the faces, and how do I add depth. Noob question, I know, I just want to make realistic stuff.

Hya

In box modelling you usually start off with a box and therefore have depth. Idea is to make a box in about the right shape and then cut it up with the knife tool to add verticies in the right places. Don't cut it into triangles though otherwise you will be in big troubl ;)

To add limbs eg on a box that is the chest of a dog, cut faces where the limbs should grow from and  use the extrude tools.

To fill faces the edges have to obey certain rules, eg one edge can only belond to 'x' number of faces. Check the manual and you will find how many. When you select edges they have different colours telling you how many faces they belong too. Can't remember the colours but a short search of the manual gives

http://www.anim8or.com/manual/4_object_editor.html#adding_faces

you can add depth to a one vertex wide mesh with the 'shel''tool in point edit mode.

Thank you. That will help. :D But I mean where you draw the line thing and hit edit - fill holes and stuff...

Hmm

To fill a hole you need one to fill. So maybe you don't have a hole??

To have a hole you need a closed polygon. Anything over two sides. But the sides must be joined.

Best way to do it is to gos step by step.

In point edit mode select the 'add edge' button.

While holding down the SHIFT key draw a line.

Let go the shift key.

select the last vertices /point/dot thingy on the line you drew and it will go white

While you have the cursor on this verticie left click and drag.

You will now have another line.

Repeat the process but this time draw the line back to the open end of the 'polygon'.

Make sure the pointer hovers over the vertice.

The verticie will turn red.

Let the mouse button go.

Chose e dge select in the menu (there are three buttons, one is a dot, the next one is a diagonal line, the third one is a filled triangle. Chose the diagonal line. This is 'edge select'.

Click on drag select (the broken lined rectangle.

Select all the lines you drew.

They will turn white.

Hit shift j.

this will fill in your face.

well the face on the anim8or screen anyways :)
