When I try to have two objects touching (no space between a face on one and a parallel face on the other), I can't get it to render well. If I put them so that the two faces are at the same coordinates, they don't render correctly. If I put them very slightly apart from one another (say a gap of .0005 or whatever), I can see light pass between them at certain angles. How can I make it look like they're touching without the bottom of one occupying the same physical space as the top of the other?

You should be a bit more clear in your question. Do you try to merge 2 faces together, or are you making an animation of it? Short: are you modeling in object mode or animating in scene mode? If modeling: select the 2 faces and press '=', or bring the faces' points close together and press Shift+L.

Scene mode. Sorry about being unclear before. That's what I get for posting at 7:20 in the morning! Furthermore, the object that is going on the inside of the other is semi-transparent (think of a piece of tinted glass on top of a table).

If I'm correct, you want to have 2 faces against each other of 2 different objects in scene mode. Right? Maybe a screen shot will clear this up? Because as you describe, just moving the faces close to each other doesn't work.
