Okay. So I have a sort of squashed sphere shape for a head. I want to make a hole in it for a mouth. Can anyone tell me how to do that? Is there a way to just subdivide the faces I need and push the points back to make the shape of the mouth?
What's the best way to do this?

The best you can do is to check the tutorials Kreator recommends you; anyway, if you want a short basic explanation, here it goes:
1. Select the faces in the area where you want tho hole to be; if you need more exact shape, first do Edit>Subdivide Faces and move some points to get the shape you want.
2. Once you have several faces forming the shape of the desired hole, you just need to need to "push it back". Select the faces and use "Extrude connected" tool.
I recommend reading Object Editor/Point Edit mode (http://www.anim8or.com/manual/4_object_editor.html) section in the manual, you'll be surprised how many useful tools you can find...
