How about a "Camera" view in Object mode. That way, I could move through an object without having to switch to Scene mode.
I'm designing a steel building for a friend, and currently the only way I can work on the interior in flat or smooth shaded is to delete a wall face, and then add it back once I am finished.
...With a camera view, I could position the camera inside the building, and edit what I want. It would also be useful for previewing the inside of the building before I render - again, without having to setup a complete scene.
I could pan, zoom, tilt, dolley, etc.
I think it would give a lot more flexibility than the current "External" views

You should be able to edit with perspective (and using the "Arc Rotate" feature).
As for rendering, stills should be no problem, and "Scene Mode" was created for motion.

Perspective is still an external view. I am referring to editing an object from within that object.
Say you have a sphere inside a cube... If you are in Flat shaded or Smooth shaded, you can't edit the sphere, because you can't see it. No matter how far you zoom in or how you rotate the view, you can't see through the box. If you switch to Scene mode, you can place the camera inside the box and see the sphere along with the inside of the box, but you cannot edit them.

Actually, with perspective, if you move it enough towards the object, you can get the view inside the 'cube'.
To do this, go to perspective mode, and slide the mouse from the top-right of the screen to the bottom left of the screen with the Right-mouse button held-down.
Of course, your object would have to be large, and in both scene and object mode you can scale them so I would see it as a waste of time going to another mode to do something I could do i the current mode

The Perspective view is the same as the Camera view except that in the Scene mode the Camera shows fog, the background, etc. You should be able to use the Perspective view to see anything in your model that a Camera view would show.

maybe it would be good if we could set the default position and orientation of the Perspective viewpoint for each object, though. that would save some people a lot of hassle, having to get the 'camera' into the right place every time they reopen the file.
