Title: Split Screens
Post by: RnDr FOX on July 23, 2008, 02:43:53 pm
I mentioned this before and if someone else said this too sorry for bringing this back up. What would be cool is if you can split screens kind of like Blender (sorry for mentioning another program Steve, I know you probably find this annoying), but it would be nice to have 2 or 3 screens sometimes. Thanks ;D

If you what 4 screens then you just have to select the left top corner of the screen and select "all"

Monex i already know that I mean if you want two screens instead of four this would be a great feature

Or if not less or more screens, a cursor in the middle of the screens to change the size of the four screens.

RnDr FOX I know what you mean. i was on Blender a few minutes ago doing the exact same thing, it's a very good process and speeds up modelling and rendering. (And yes I do practise Blender as well as anim8or for those who do not know). I am not sure how easy or difficult it would be to put in anim8or, and it would have to have a difference to Blender, it cant be totally the same. But good say RnDr FOX :)

Thanks Spicy ;D Back in my blender days (those days didn't last long :-[) I found the program difficult but the split screen was one feature that I liked and it would be neat to have that feature in anim8or. And like you said I don't know how difficult it would be but I would like it to be different than blender too.(Though that is not my call)

He, I have no problems with Blender.  It's a very capable program.  2 or 3 panes has always been on my "to do" list along with adjustable sizes, etc.  It just never got high enough to in priority, but you never know....

Sweet...I can't wait to see all of the new features implemented. Thanks Steve ;)

I would like to see the ability to render a portion of an image for debug purposes.

example:

I have a very detailed model and a complex light setup. There is a portion of the model I am working on and would like to see how that part will look rendered but I have to render the entire image to see the result. Its not critical of course, but would be kinda nice to just highlight an area and render it.

Steve, I've noticed in some "Suggestions" threads you mention that a particular item is on your "To Do" list... Why don't you post your to do list on the website or forums, ranked according to priority so people won't ask for things you are already working on, or have planned?

I know I'd be curious to know what the future holds for the greatest free, stand-alone 3D modelling tool (sorry, need to clean the brown off my nose now)

You mean Wings3D?
Anim8or does everything (except physics).

To Do List? Steve does mention that alot, i bet there's a lot to do on his to do list maybe things we don't even know about! I wouldn't want to spoil the suprise though, best things about new releases.

Wings3D isn't stand-alone... Try loading it on a flash drive, and taking it from PC to PC.  If I need Physics, I go to my trusty 3dsMAX 9

Maybe Steve can give us the TOP 10 ITEMS on the "to do list" (well...if he wants to of course)

My to-do list has over 2000 entries on it :)  Many are duplicates or overlapping or different but equivalent ways of doing the same thing.  I use it to help prioritize things.  I don't see any advantage in posting it.  If someone has a suggestion I think it's better to hear what they need for their own perspective.  I use the list for long term planning, etc.  If there's two ways of doing something I like to pick the one where I could share the code with other features.

If I had infinite time I still wouldn't choose to add them all. What make Anim8or easy to learn and to use is that the featue set is small enough to grasp without spending months learning it.  Simply adding a bunch of features does not make software better.

Oh, yeah, the top 10.  I don't want to post that because the top one might not come out for a long time and people would get impatient and keep bugging me about it forever.  Ray tracing was in the top 2 for 4 years before it came out.  (And I won't even mention IK :))

Wow that is pretty interesting. 2000 that is amazing!!! You are right about the small features. If you can compress five actions into one the you have accomplished simplicity.
And Steve I am not too concerned a whole lot on IK. Sure it would be great, but people seam to play it up a little too much.
Also what about the animation department will we see any major changes there?
Also in the future, say about 5 maybe 7 years from now when Anim8or gets to be a major thing will you get a team to help you make Anim8or or is this a solo operation?
Wow I ask too many questions :-[

Yeah good question RnDr FOX, maybe steve likes to work alone or maybe he still has his assistants (See The Author). IK is a major thing but we will just have to wait as will everyone, I can imagine what the top 10 will be and I could definatley tell what a few of steve's top ten are, maybe we should just wait and find out later, I love suprises! Oh and steve about the top ten, you said that people would keep "bugging" you about it, why don't (if you wanted to but I can tell you don't) give the information and then just leave it there, no questions asked. But still I would prefer to wait and find out what these top 10 are! I love anim8or  ;D
