A newbie trying to model a space ship (help!)
« on: June 25, 2008, 02:00:22 pm »

Ok, I started seriously messing with Anim8or few days ago and I keep failing to get the results I want. I've read bunch of tutorials, but each time I try to do something my way, I'm stuck.

This is the basic outline of a ship model I am trying to create and keep failing:

My problems. Faces division. I keep doing something wrong here. I don't know how to divide a face (on desired parts) and then extrude individual parts. Cut face tool is confusing me. For the front "guns" I had to create new solids, and as you see, when I apply convert to subdivied I get c**p. That's another problem. Smoothing control. Edge properties doesn't seem to work for me at all. I tryed everything. Even select all edges and play with the rounded ratio in edge properties. Nothing. I get same results each time after convert to subdivision.

Any help is appreciated. Here is the Anim8or file: http://www.ftpisland.com/lachie13/ship_testing.an8

If you can help me merge the "guns" with the ship and help me figure out the edges smooting, that would be great.

Help me!

Ok, I made a slight improvement. This time select all edges and rounded set to 1 worked. I must have been doing something wrong.

Although, this doesn't solve all my problems.

Oh.. the text was a bit blurred... here it is:

1. Let's pretend this is your spaceship

2. Select theese two faces, the ones you whant to link together, and click: Edit > bridge

3. This will be the result:

4. Do the same for the second one

5. Now click your object, then click: Build > subdivide faces. and fill inn the value like this:

6. Do the same as in step 5 once more, then click: Build > convert to subdivided. You will end up with this:

7. Hope this helps! Happy anim8ing! Mac.T

Thanks. This helped a lot.

I shouldn't complain on the tutorials I read / watched as they are great, but over 5 I read missed some of these important features. Maybe a tutorial completely oriented on creating a really complex object with extrusions and what not would be nice. Hopefully I won't need it.

EDIT:

Wait. Forgot to ask. How did you split the front main body face in two parts? I'm having difficulties using the cut tool.
