making a space ship
« on: January 06, 2008, 11:50:25 pm »

As the title says, I'm making a space ship. I've gotten the ship body and the wings done. Now I need to know how to make the propulsion systems: ie the wings will have engine like things for getting it into the air and the back will have stuff for flying through space. But I can't figure out how to make it look right.

So what exactly do you want help with?  You can't get it to look right?  Nobody can help if you don't provide any pictures and don't tell us anymore.  It sounds like you're just telling us your problem.  Are you asking for help?

Yes, sorry, I'm asking for help. I need help with the propulsions. This is what I have so far:

I don't like how the engine looks. I think they probably need to be smaller... but I also can't remember how to make on end go in on itself. If anyone could help me or point me to a tut, I'd be very grateful. :)

To make one end go in on itself, use the inset tool on the back faces, then use the extrude tool to extrude them in.

Could I suggest you draw a picture of what you want (MS Paint or pen, paper & scanner) and post that.  It is difficult to know what you are trying to achieve.

First you go to a view showing the back of the engines.  Now select the main faces on the back of the engine.  If there are multiple faces you want to go in, select them and go "edit>merge faces" or press "shift + m".  Next use the inset tool.  To use it, just click and drag with faces selected.  You'll see the effect it has as you drag.  Inset the amount you want.  Now, with the faces still selected use the group extrude tool.  You can see the effect when you click and drag from a side view of the engines, preferably in wireframe mode.  You can then use edge reinforcement if you wish: Tutorial on edge reinforcement
