How to replicate characters?

To replicate characters from certain movies, would actaully phsyically having parts and figures of the model help the best?

It depends on your personal preference.  It can help some people to have a real-life visual aid, though for some, 2d references work just fine.  One nice thing about having the actual figure is that you yourself can take pictures of it from any angle you want.  Still, it depends on how accurate those models actually are, since sometimes it could be something like an action figure and not actually be as accurate as you'd like.
