[suggestion] Shadows
« on: May 07, 2008, 12:45:14 pm »

Hi!

I'm really gratefull! The Art Raytracer is great!
But I can't use soft when I use reflection...
It would be very cool (but,I know, will make slower rendering) use these two options together ^^

Another thing is about shadows in transparent things... would be nice if the shadow seems more opaque or transparent depending of the material
and that "glass effect" would be a great idea too, I mean the light that changes the colour when pass through the transparent object:

I know that some of this suggestion can be hard to do, but are just suggestions ^^
Thanks for your great job, Steve!

And sorry if I wrote something wrong... I'm just learning english yet ;D

Bye

Hi Guilherme! Welcome to the forum!

I agree with you, it would be really great if transparent materials affected the color and intensity of light that goes through...

As for the soft shadows... ART raytracer is able to render soft shadows, it works the same way as the scanline renderer. Didn't you forget to enable AntiAliasing? Soft shadows work only with the AA on...

The AA is on, but...

Look:

The shadow seems like a "noise effect"  :-[

The problem is number of AA samples.

Click "Render>AA Setup" and try higher value (I think 64 should be ok...); remember, the higher value you enter, the longer it will take to render the image.

i just stumbled across a website with an opensource raytracer. wouldn't it be easier for steve to just take some parts of those codes? or is that against GNU?

Really, I though caustics was the concentration of light on a surface when refracted and reflected through a transparent object such as glass.
Also, light changing color and illuminating another surface as it passes through or bounces of the first surface is Diffuse Interreflction, both have to do with GI.

Guilheme Amorim ---
The Internet is your friend.  Got a question?  Type it into your browser's Search line, and you can take your pick of what "might" be the answer.  Of course, it's up to you to determine whether the context is pertinent.  In this case, we've been referring to programming and 3D illustration.  So, just filter out what's not related to those topics.

And, to give you a more direct answer, here's where you can find out about GNU: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU.  More specificallly, the references to GNU, above, are the "Project," which is related to free software, as opposed to the original Operating System.

GI is "Global Illumination," and I'll let you search the web for an explanation of that (BTW Wikipedia is a good place to start for that one, too!)
