Size Control
« on: November 01, 2020, 02:38:44 pm »

Imagine I want to make a desk to save and export so that I can use it in Blender or Poser or Daz or whatever. So the computer desk I'm composing this at measures 60"w x 24"d x 30"h. I have my grid fixed (it'd be nice to make that something I could set one in the config and have it apply to new projects without having to set it every time - hint, hint) at 1' spacing so I can build my model desk to the appropriate dimensions. What (if anything in Anim8or) can I do to make sure it shows up the right size when I go to put a character behind it in one of the rendering programs mentioned above?

Hey there,

I'm not sure of default object size in blender, but with poser, and i'm assuming with daz, the models are tiny.

One way of working it out would be to import a poser, (or other), model into anim8or and use the size as a reference. You may need to convert the poser object into .obj format first.
Or, export anim8or object as .obj file, and import into poser, or other app.
 Trial and error.

Anim8or itself is a fairly powerful piece of kit. You may find it good for what you want anyway, and not need to use any of those other programs?
.obj format is fairly common, and can be used for moving models into, and out of, a variety of software packages, including anim8or.

Thanks for the response, johnar. I'm using closely spaced grids right now (wish I could specify a default grid condition (on/automatic, size-object, size-scene etc) in a configuration screen they way we can specify directories now (hint, hint, Steven  ;) ). Having to wait on using Blender or Daz Studio. My current graphics card handles Anim8or and Hexagon just fine but with Daz Studio latency goes through the roof and Blender complains about graphic card insufficiency. Got a new, decent graphics card supposed to be delivered today. Wish me luck that it solves the problem It is supposed to be solidly in the middle of the top 10 most popular graphics cards both in performance and in value. It pushed the heck outta the budget to get but "in for a penny, in for a pound".

I don't have Daz but I do have Carrara which has Daz/Poser object import algorithms.  On creating some test cubes in Anim8or and importing them to Carrara via the OBJ format the following appears to be the case:

Anim8or: 1 units
OBJ: 0.0254 units
Carrara: .0254 metres
Poser/Daz: 2.439 metres

So it seems, at least for these tests, that 1 Anim8or unit translates to 1 inch as a straight import, and 96 inches for a Daz Studio or Poser import (which maps 96 'Carrara units' to 1 OBJ unit).

Thank you, ENSONIQ5. That is some danged valuable information. It is very useful to know that an object 6 units high in Anim8or is only half a foot high when exported as an obj. That means I need to do a final x12 scale before I export if I want the result to be "life sized" when imported. Currently I am setting up my projects with a fixed grid of 1 unit. It will be a trivial correction to either do a final scaling action or just consider the 1-unit grid to reflect inches. If I want things in "feet, I can simply set my grid at 12.

I'm still hoping that someday our benevolent and beneficent creator will see fit to allow us to define default grids with the ability to alter the defaults as desired on a per-project basis. ;)
