Question concerning material zones
« on: December 31, 2007, 11:03:42 am »

Hello,

i have one question - if the answer is to be found in the manual I just did not find it... I have tried modelling a candleholder complete with the candleholder, candle and flame. So far it went quite well, but when I export it as wavefront object to use it in poser, it allways has only one material zone for the whole thing, whereas I would like to have three different material zones, for the holder, the candle and the flame seperated. I had set up these materials in anim8tor, but as said when I export it, they melt together to one zone called "default". Has anyone suggestions for that?

Thank you and happy new year!

My suggestion would be to have the different meshes as seperate objects.  You can then export each one as a .obj file.  In poser you can import all three and you should have all three different materials.

Well but than I would have three props instead of one, wouldn't ? But I'd like to stay the whole thing one prop with three different material zones.

The buil- in.obj export code in the v0.96 preview should preserve multiple materials.  You can find a copy in the "v0.96 Preview" link in the left hand menu: http://www.anim8or.com/download/preview/index.html

Ah thank you - than I'd better get used to the whole modelling business in the current version and wait for the v0.96 to get ready before starting any complex projects which would require multiple materials.

"If you are a new Anim8or user then you probably should not be using this version.  Naive questions and incorrect problem reports will not help the preview process."
I think that would apply to me *gg*

I was afraid that v0.96 might have a lot of problems since I'd changed some key internal code.  As it turns out it's quite stable so you should be ablw to use it OK.  But please don't post your questions in the v0.96 forum unless you are sure that they are about the new v0.96 features.
