Anim8or on Windows 10
« on: July 29, 2015, 06:01:01 pm »

I just installed Windows 10 today and it doesn't work. I'm playing around with compatibility modes but I haven't had any luck yet. Anyone know a way to run Anim8or on Windows 10?

(I'm using the 1166 version, so I'm not even sure that's the latest version.)

I thought I tried them all, but I guess I missed one. It works on Windows XP SP3. :)

Odd... It worked for me in Windows build 10130.
http://www.anim8or.com/smf/index.php/topic,5168.msg38641.html#msg38641

I never thought to check Windows build 10240 (RTM).

I will today and report back.

Ok, tested in build 10240 and it works, however you must right click the icon and say "Run as Admin" (or set it to always run as admin in properties)

The reason is that an8 makes changes to the registry for making sure its associated and also for window position etc.

You don't have to wait. Microsoft provides a tool to manually download the upgrade at
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

When you run it, you can opt to do an in-place upgrade or create a DVD or USB installer kit. If you select the latter, you can later do a clean install if you want.

Be sure to do a full backup of your computer before doing the upgrade, just in case.

Unfortunately, Windows 10 defaults to being spyware. Make sure you go through the Privacy settings and turn off all of the options. If you value your privacy, you also shouldn't use either Cortana or Edge. There are a lot of apologists who say it's no big deal because just about all the tablet and phone vendors are doing it, but I think that's being irresponsible.

In most cases the upgrade procedure can upgrade a fully patched Win7 SP1 or 8.1 with no problems at all, although it does download over 1GB of patches in addition to the base upgrade files.

On my computer it invalidated the previous disk search cache and had to rebuild it from scratch. While that's running, all disk accesses are *very* slow. If you have many files, it could take several hours to re-index everything, as it did on mine. Of course, if you do a clean install, there's not much to index, so you probably wouldn't notice that happening.

A clean install, wiping out all your files, can only be done after you've done an upgrade and the activation procedure has successfully registered your computer with Microsoft's servers. Otherwise you need a Windows 10 product key: your old Win7 or Win8 key is not valid for Win10.

Nvidia's GeForce Win10 graphics driver still has some issues, which might be the cause of some problems and slowdowns. Its discussion forum is 81 pages already, so you might want to skip to the end.

See https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/860152/official-windows-10-353-62-game-ready-display-driver-feedback-thread-7-29-15-/

Some Firefox weirdnesses can be cleared up by disabling Firefox's hardware acceleration, which is enabled by default.

Are there any positive benefits in upgrading to win 10 from 7 or 8?

Not really Windows Edge Takes over the latop machine, as does the photo viewer that refuses to load raw CR2s Had to disable them, so for me, theres not a lot I need. I think it geared to the windows 8 users that have had a bad time using it. My desktop machine will stay Windows 7 for the foreseeable future.

Ditto.  Until I see any benefit in upgrading I'll be sticking with W7.  Good to know Anim8or runs on W10 though.

so my laptop still won't update 3 weeks later, but my new desktop has let me go ahead with the update within a few days of being built... weird.  :P

anyway, i've briefly tried both 0.98 and the latest dev build 1185 on Win10 Pro, and both seemed to work fine with no compatibility settings needed.  ran 0.98 as admin, from the SSD, and it associated .an8 properly, and then i opened a previous project and rendered a short video clip.  the only issue i encountered is that the new security system didn't want to let me run the dev build straight out of its zip folder, but that wasn't a biggie, as it did allow me to override and run it anyway.

i don't know exactly what my graphics card specs are, but it's definitely an nvidia, so the Win10 Pro / nvidia combo seems to be a good one :)

There are benefits. Not necessarily for anim8or but the latest direct x is exclusive to it. It also speeds up the boot time considerably, especially from sleep mode, its lightning fast for me now. (though your milage will vary)
Its better at multitasking with its task view and additional desktop to help clean up your workspace. I was holding off before but now that Ive upgraded I don't see any reason not to do it, its a free upgrade and everything seem to be compadible.

i've already forgotten how to survive without quarter-screen snapping!

also done a bit more experimentation with Anim8or since i last posted, and everything still seems to be working OK.  generally speaking, i think i'd recommend taking the upgrade.

Ive been using 10 on a machine since Jan but also did an upgrade on a clients machine a couple of weeks ago.
I found no issues, however started seing scare stories on the net and feedback so I held off on someone elses laptop.

Are the scare stories being overcome? was it just anxious people and unsubstanciated claims?

I did have one glitch, the ATI Radeon HD 3200 driver stopped working a week ago on one machine. I left feedback and noticed quite a number of similar problems.
I did a windows refresh (Because I broke the registry trying to force windows to use the correct driver which apparently was loaded, just not used) and now everything is working correctly again. Ive yet to leave feedback on that.

Im just woundering if the general opinion has shifted in favour of 10?

By the way, MS finally realised their mistake with coloured titlebars (Why the hell did they ever remove customisation, its been part of windows since 1980's) and have allowed it again in build 10520 (Yet to test)
They made some excuse that some websites have colour schemes that clash with glass and or coloured titlebars.
