Gouda
« on: February 04, 2015, 12:03:04 am »

My daughter (a graphic design student at the university) challenged me to model a wheel of gouda with a wedge removed. I'm not sure why it had to be gouda.

Great work!  The crumbs are a nice touch and I'm very impressed with the care you've taken with the knife blade.  If I could suggest one thing it would be to make the edges of the cut cheese a bit less perfect, kinda rounded off a bit, and perhaps a bumpiness added to the cut faces to suggest the slight stickiness of cheese.  This is actually one of the more difficult things to do in any CGI project, since computers do mathematics really well it is easy to achieve perfect edges, lines, curves etc.  Introducing a bit of chaos is tricky to get right but can make all the difference if photo-realism is the goal.  That's not a criticism, more an observation, and it's something I need to work on in my own projects.

Overall I'd say challenge accepted, and achieved!

Nice cheese there, Ronald de Boer! (Always wondered if your screen name is after the soccer player   ;) )

Anyway, as a Dutch person I can say out of experience that it is rare to see a Dutch cheese without at least some holes (bubbles) in it. just a few will do.
see the picture:

Also, if you want to improve it further, as you can see as a cheese ripens over time, the yellow gets slightly darker on the outside of the cheese. You could  add a texture for some realism.

In all, I like the cheese, but you could make it look a little more yummy by adding some realism :D

 Nice one ronaldefarmer
Same comments as above. Some more texturing, some holes and a few other imperfections would help towards realism.
Is your daughter also modelling a gouda?, and if so, do you think we'll get to see hers?... ;)

Good pointers everybody, here is another attempt.

Johnar: My daughter's gouda was done in Adobe Illustrator so I won't post it here. You can see it on my webpage if you want. Click the graphic that says "Gallery" and scroll down to the last picture. Incidentally, I saw your video "The Seed That Turned" for the first time recently--very entertaining!

Amazing how just a few small things can make such a difference.  The softer edges on the cheese definitely communicate its texture better, in the first image it looked more like cut apple with the crisp edges.  The debris on the knife blade and the cheese label are nice touches, and I should say that the wax material is absolutely spot on.  This is a really nice image, deftly done!  One final point: While the bricks are ok being out of focus, I would consider a more detailed texture for the table top.

Your latest image is definately improved by the last tweaks. Nice one.

Had a look at Mirandas'.
I like the picture, nice one Miranda, but can't help but comment on the difference between a picture of a 3D model and a standard 2D picture.
Even if you made yours a 'cartooney' type image, there would still be more apparent 'depth' and therefor 'realism' in the final pic?. (i'm assuming really, but probably not far from the truth).
And agree with ENSONIQ5, and maybe consider a more detailed texture for the table top.

Regards seed that turned. Thanks for the comment. Glad you found it entertaining.
It was my longest video for some time, but then about 5 years ago i came up with 'Eart', which clocks in at just under 10 minutes.

(free plug for a video which i was never that happy with, lol)
Visiting your webpage is inspiring me to finish mine. (has been half done for several years)
Anyway, enough about that.
 Nice Gouda Ron.
Mirandas has a mouse, which is also a nice touch.

Yeah Ron, this latest one render is pretty solid, I must say! I'd agree with Ensoniq that the wall and table texture could be a bit more detailed, but besides those I think it looks pretty great!
I guess maybe the shadows could be even softer (or less alike), but now I'm nitpicking.
