very simple selection trouble
« on: July 25, 2013, 11:35:12 pm »

Hello, I'm very new, but I'm hoping to love this program very much.
I'm having a very simple yet difficult problem over here;
I can select multiple faces, on say, a cube, by clicking and dragging the selection box.
However, I can not deselect any faces. Also, I can't select more than one face by simply clicking on faces.
I've tried holding buttons like shift, ctrl, and alt while clicking, and left clicking- and I've tried just left clicking on its own- and nothing seems to work.
I tried using this program at first with my taptop's touchpad and mouse buttons, and that didn't work, but the problem persists when I'm using a real mouse.
:) can you help please?

  • To deselect all faces left click with the selection tool (drag select tool or normal select tool) where there are no faces.
  • To deselect one face from a group press and hold the alt key while right clicking on a face.
  • To select multiple faces right click on a face (or right click and drag if using the drag select tool).
  • To select multiple faces kinda like drawing with the mouse (I have no clue what to call this :P ) hold ctrl when right or left clicking and drag with the mouse.
  • To select a single face and deselect all other left click on a face (should be obvious)
Also in order to edit faces and points you have to have the object you wish to edit be a mesh
which can be done by selecting the object and under the menu build, click on convert to mesh.
If you have done all of these, then there is something else at play here.

Hi SelLillianna , and welcome. :)

Maybe, just maybe, you are still in 'Object mode', when you should be in 'Object EDIT mode'.

  Are you still here?:

 When you should be here:

Also worth mentioning again, multiple selection is done with the RIGHT mouse button.  Maybe your mouse buttons are mapped in a non-standard way?

No problem SelLillianna, hope you have fun!  If you haven't already done so, have a read through of the manual.  It's quite short (well, for a 3D animation package it is) and like the deselect procedure above there are a number of other "unusual" things that are not obvious or intuitive if you are used to Microsoft or Apple functionality.  Good luck and remember to post your work!
