I have a character as a figure, and a gun as an object. in scene mode, how would i attach the gun to the character's hand bone?

You can add an object to a bone in figure mode, if you have the man made then you can attach the gun to one of his hand bones  orientate it then it will always follow that bone. In fact you could add another bone specifically for that object.
