forum registration down?
« on: February 28, 2012, 05:52:07 pm »

Hi, a friend of mine wants to get into anim8or, and said she cannot register with the forum... is the forum locked out for new members indefinitely?

Hmm, I had thought it was re-enabled a while ago, but I guess it was disabled again, probably around the middle of November. I'll email Steve about it.

So that is why deep thought has been the last member registered for so long?

I was also wondering about that... a year ago. Yeah,  would love to see some new faces around here. Was it for anti-spam protection?

Wow, it took us that long for someone to realize this?

Well, it's not as if those who were locked out had a way to contact us. Also, my cookies have kept me logged in for a year or so now, so that "Register" link is quite invisible to me on a normal basis ;)

I think the problem with this site is that there are so many guests hitting the site that are potential spammers!

Anim8orWorld have the honeypot project running on our SMF 2.0.2 site and the spammer level is on average 30 spammers a day, which are trapped and ejected before even getting to the forum, then registration is protected with stopspammer that reports any suspect and is held in hiatus until checked and verified by admin.

With the membership level here at over 6800 (of which the majority have not even bothered to post ) the spammers will again have a field day.

Between August 2010 and  November 2010 6014 new registrations were made, all of whom, I suspect were spammers/Harvesters.

So my first objective, rather than to just open it up again would be to update the forum software to the latest  SMF 1.1.16 or even better the  latest 2.0.2 version and add a honeypot to the site as well as  a stopspammer mod. Then to delete the 6000 odd bogus accounts that have been made.

I would have to agree with Kreator... the website and forum as a whole would do greatly with upgrading. Of course, forum change could result in the loss of a lot of wonderful current and older/archive works here...

Then again, anim8or as a software really needs attention... so perhaps to upgrade the site may not complement the program's slipping into antiquity....

I whole heartedly agree Arik!

I wonder how many "guests" are actually members and should they not be logging into the forum as opposed to just casually browsing about, it makes me wonder really how many active members there really are now.

I have to admit that a lot of times i come to this site i don't really log in unless I have something to post or comment to say. Either that or the fact that some post require you to log in to view the wip that people post.

I had suggested antispam mods and autopruning and so on, but Steve doesn't respond well to that kind of thing, it seems (more often it's that he doesn't respond at all -_-). I had also done a ton of custom modification with SMF in the past (anyone remember Anim8or.org or CG-Nation?) and offered my assistance, but to no avail.

So there's not much we can do at the moment. Steve hasn't responded yet, so I'll just sit here and twiddle my thumbs :P

I was able to register recently after emailing Steve on Ultimate Anim8or. He created an account for me. Thanks BTW. I'm starting to get a hang for using Anim8or. I've been using Truespace 3D but I want to learn Anim8or too. The ASL scripts are truly awesome and I hope to create an XSI exporter eventually.
