How do I learn Blender?
« on: November 02, 2011, 08:54:45 pm »

I've had Blender around for years now, and I've tried my hardest to learn it, but it seems the learning curve is, literally, just stupid. I can't figure out the main functions, I don't know anything about modelling in it, the best I can do are some physics tests. I have no idea where to start,  and plus, I'm a pre-beginner, and I'd suggest not taking those words lightly, because I couldn't figure this out on my own if my life depended on it.

I know where you're coming from, I've spent the last couple months learning blender, when I started I couldn't get anything done. What helped me was just spending about a week doing tutorials before trying to work on my own projects, it gets you familiar with the keyboard shortcuts (which help a ton) and gets you used to the interface. Blender cookie (http://cgcookie.com/blender/) and Blender Guru (http://www.blenderguru.com/) are both great places to look for tutorials, there updated pretty much every week too. Good luck, blender and anim8or make a pretty powerful team once you get the hang of it.

I have the same story here. I've had blender for a while now but the UI is ridiculous. I've also had 3ds max for about a year and every once in a while I open it up and figure things out. The biggest problem about blender that I hate is to get your texture maps to display in realtime in the viewport. I mean, in 3ds max I figured it out with no help at all, yet in blender its so frustrating!

Im also trying to learn blender but only for the rigging and toon render options it offers. Take it from me, your better off learning 3ds max (or maya?) because in my experience it has been easier for me to learn than blender.

I didn't even last ten minutes in Blender when I tried it.  Waaay back when I first began my quest for 3D software, Blender was my first try. I looked through the site and thought "Ooooh! I'm going to love this!" Then I download it and change my mind. I tried a tutorial for some "gingerbread man" and I started with a cube and ended with... a cube.  It wasn't worth it for me at all, especially when I found out from my virus scanner that I had trojans (you've all heard that story). So yeah, not a Blender fan at all. I just might stick to Anim8or my whole life until I'm forced to learn something else in college, even then I'll probably still use it for modelling like the rest of you.

I can definetly see using Anim8or as a modeller, and Blender serving for rigging and rendering. I have a couple problems, though... 1) I'm not good at modelling in Anim8or, 2) I really want physics and some feature that don't come with Anim8or. Not to say I'm not gonna use Anim8or, just to say I don't think I'm good enough in the most basic to make the jump to something so complex.

I can relate.  Blender is a bear.  Tutorials are for all different versions.  The 2.5 (Ithink) update gave the whole program a makeover.  Let un know if you conquer it.  :)
