Spherical Projection Questions…
« on: August 09, 2011, 05:51:13 pm »

Hey, all. I've been trying to put a texture on a (somewhat deformed) sphere and as it always does, it has a line running through the middle of the texture. So when I select the object, say Settings > Component > Texture UV and select Spherical Projection, it looks just like I want it to! Even if I properly make a spherical map, there are still some noticeable flaws that the Spherical Projection option in Anim8or fixes.

Now, I want to know if there is a way to produce the same effect using some other program? Say, Unity 3D for example. Or Blender, or LithUnwrap, UVMapper Classic, anything…?

I've never seen a way to make a texture work like Anim8or's Texture UV setting does. It does something to the model/texture, and I don't know what.
Can anyone shed a little light on this?

Basically, I just want to know if there's a way to duplicate whatever it is the Spherical Projection option in Anim8or does, in some other program, using some other method, so it will work universally in all programs, and not just in Anim8or.

It's really just a UV tool in Anim8or. Other programs may or may not have the same tool. But when it comes to achieving the same effect in another program, it all comes down to how much work you are willing to put into it.

Apparently you're only interested in a one-click solution when unwrapping a model, in a way that makes it conform to a premade texture. Almost always it needs to be the other way, where you make the texture conform to the unwrapped model.

If you're only interested in the spherical mapping tool, then yes, there are similar tools in other programs. Keyword is "Spherical". UVMapper, LithUnwrap, probably most other programs. Just know that the "spherical projection" you experienced in Anim8or is probably the un-adjusted version based on a regular sphere. Spherical mapping looks entirely different when the projection is used on any other kind of mesh, or if it was rotated even a tiny bit on a sphere mesh.

In the end, I suggest you learn what uvmapping/unwrapping actually is. You'll have complete control over your ability to texture a model if you do.

Yeah, I know how to UV map. I wasn't looking for a one-click solution, either, just a way to achieve the same effect, as you said.

Okay, then. Perhaps I can figure something out.
I use LithUnwrap for my UV mapping, but it just seems to lack the kind of features I'd need to make it work properly.

Thanks, anyway, for the reply. :)
