Anim8or Chat
« on: July 18, 2011, 10:48:23 pm »

Hey guys,

We have a chat room officially endorsed by this website.

Reasons to have an active chat room:
  • Bring the community together more
  • Quick help for those who need it
  • Fun projects and interaction

I know, I know. IRC is either old or obscure to most 'net users here. Fortunately there is a web-based chat room available. I'm going to try to stay logged in for as many hours as possible to help make the chat room float again, feel free to join!

Doesn't matter if you just stay idle most of the time. Good conversations can sprout!

Server: irc.irchighway.net
Channel: #anim8or
Browser-Based Chat Room

I dont think you'll see much of a resurgence of the community until we at least get a shout out from Steve and maybe a word or two about the future of Anim8or. I remember going on the IRC chats back in the day, but yeah it seems so dated in the age of social networking. Rather than pushing a dinosaur like IRC you might be better off trying to promote a facebook and/or Google plus community or something. Of course unless it gets put on the front page that probably wouldn't take off either.

Not trying to be a downer, just being realistic.  We need at least a vague sense of moving forward and that's not going to happen if we just do things the way we always have.

I'm not really looking to miraculously increase the community size or activity. It's just something where the users of today can hang for a bit if they're online and doing their 3D thing.

The web-based chat helps keep the chat room accessible in the meantime.

i hope it works out. ive been checking in every now and again and i havent seen much activity. im hoping something changes. ive "moved" on to other programs but i still use anim8or for modeling and until i find something that works better for me ill keep on using anim8or.

hopefully your chatroom gets more people on here. even though we all want more anim8or i think we've all made it more advanced just by using it. and by we i mean u guys. like boberts face plugin, raxx's hotkey interface thing, all those scripts you guys made like nik e's countless number of them and some of the true works of art from users such as simon.
(this is just to name a few names, you shouldnt feel happy or said if u were or werent mentioned i had a lot in mind but just didnt mention them)

we've all come as a community (and a good 1 at that) and helped each other, as well as anim8or.

but if you do make something like that i will make it a point to sign up for it.

edit: oh u did make it:) i missed the link

Hm, the link is a little inconspicuous, eh? I'll bolden it a little :P

Well said though, I'd say we had a quality group here.

Hey Raxx, not exactly on topic but did you ever find a fix for why I couldn't run your ad on?

:-X That is a good question.

I kinda stopped development since I had implemented the main features I wanted and ended up not doing 3D for a while :P

But I still have all the dev files, so I think I might tinker with it some more...

Hello RaXX,
Nice to see you again on the forum, I hope we'll see a lot of your amazing works.
I think I'll have a little more time for Anim8or next year and a chat place could be good
(but for me the best thing on the forum is the challenge category)

I don't know if it would be more benificial than problematic but I kinda think it would be cool if we had a irc chat for anim8or.
Considering that we are a smaller community the chat wouldn't (shouldn't) be going at a billion sentences a second like the ones that have over 500 people in and you can't follow a conversation worth a poo.
I don't know, it was just a thought.

A while ago I had set up an IRC chat as the official room (endorsed by Steve), #anim8or on irc.irchighway.net

You can connect with your favorite IRC client, or through the webchat here: http://webchat.irchighway.net/?channels=irchighway

I'll start going on it again if others will (I'm on the computer quite often, so you'll likely see me there 16 hours a day)

I'm in.

For use with hexchat, don't choose the irc.irchighway.net:9999 entry, but let it choose the port automatically (use simply irc.irchighway.net).

I post stuff on Twitter under TSModman. I guess it might work to help promote Anim8or and allow people to follow the software especially now that a new beta is available. My modeling forum has a feature to share the posts made on the forum on like Twitter, Facebook, etc. When ever I make a new Anim8or post I always share it on Twitter. My forum also has a Chat feature but I would need to activate it for forum members to actually use. Let me know if I can be of some help in the endevour. Leroy.

Old thread I realize, but its applicable, so..

Irchighway doesn't seem to have anyone ( im the only one there atm). Should we switch to freenode, a more popular network ? I realize forums in most cases are plenty, but having someone answer in real time when they are available is a god send ;)

I tried going to irchighway.net, but they only seem to show 'online user stats' for the forums, not irc, which I thought was a bit odd. I think freenode is a much better option, for increased visibility at the very least, what do you all think ? Or some other higher traffic site ??

cheers

Well, IRC is a bit ancient now, and not very accessible by today's internet standards. I'd rather take the opportunity to try something else. I'm all for increasing Anim8or's exposure. If anyone has ideas about an alternative to IRC chat, I'd like to hear it.
