rendering differences...
« on: August 17, 2010, 10:41:08 am »

Check this out.... the first image was rendered on my mini-PC...

Now, I've moved it all over to my main machine - my desktop tower... and the exact same rendering comes out like below!

I went through and I think the settings match for both anim8or programs and files.

Why is there such a difference in rendering?

Below, Image 1 from the Mini-PC, Image 2 from the Tower PC.

Check your preferences, there are a lot of things in there that can be different by default from computer to computer. I've delt with this problem myself, it had the shading and transparency off if I remember right. Hope this helps.

eh... I gave up on it. Already tried all that as said before, because I did notice setting differences. Thanks though.

Looks to me like the second render just doesn't have shadows turned on.  Could be in the preferences like Dragonslayer said or perhaps the actual objects/lights

Haven't seen that before Arik, best guess is shadows have defaulted to Volume rather than Raytraced.

I dunno, because it's set to Raytrace in both cases... though the first image does have a look of lacking it, doesn't it?

The texture of the "red man figure" is quite different between the two pics.

The lighting and intensity of the shadows varies greatly - the 2nd image's shadows are less severe/harsh, showing more light than those in the first image. Also, there is shadowing in the foreground of the 2nd picture that does not exist in the first, implying some sort of light source that is not in the actual set-up. In the set-up of the scene, there are only two light sources - one placed in the location of  each of the two lamps seen. Other than that, Global Lighting is present at preset settings.

I don't remember where ( manual i think ) Steve said different video cards make different results. So if you'll render the same scene on two different comps but which have same card the result must be pretty much same. In your case we have two different comps with two different video cards, right? And by the way, time rendering?

...different video cards make different results...

Video cards have nothing at all to do with the render itself, only with how it may appear visually on a given computer.  So, as long as the material settings and any image and/or transparency maps are available to different computers, I can render the same scene on two different computers, A & B, and save each to a JPEG file, JPEGA and JPEGB.  JPEGA and JPEGB should look the same on Computer A, and they should look the same on Computer B.  However, depending on the video card in Computer A and Computer B, and whether the monitor colors have been calibrated, the image on Computer A's monitor may not look the same as Computer B's monitor.

THat's just a long way of saying, render farms don't need to have identical video cards (or any video card at all, for that matter), because rendering is strictly based on the CPU, not the video card.

...which is pretty much wat I thought (what Rudy said)  That, regardless of the PC, it's the program that creates the effects, and the render... therefore, both pic 1 and 2 should look pretty much the same, provided the preferences of anim8or are sorted and identical, right?

Which brings me back to the mystery question... why do those two pics vary so much in appearance?  One was rendered on my EEE PC, the other on my tower... other than that, as best as I can see, anim8or's settings are identical on both machines.

I dunno Arik, it's got me stumped.  Best suggestion I can offer is to experiment a bit, start with a new very basic single-light scene and render out on both machines, and keep adding complexity (ie more light, soft shadows, etc) until the problem presents itself.

On closer inspection there are a couple of very weird things in image 2, for example while the shadow immediately surrounding the nearest light is more-or-less as it should be, if you follow the power conduit down the wall to the cylindrical power coupling, the shadow under it is actually reversed, ie is lighter than the background.  Bizarre!

BTW, are these both rendered as single uncompressed frames, or as frames from a movie which might be using different codecs?

These are rendered in scene mode, as a single image render, not a movie frame.
