How do I make things stay straight when I create them?
« on: May 31, 2010, 11:36:00 pm »

I'm very new to Anim8or and it's kind of driving me nuts with the things I can not figure out.

1) When making something like a cylinder there appears to be no way to keep it perfectly parallel to an axis short of a very, very fine mouse movement. So when I make a cylinder I *try* to make it parallel to the x axis but it's always slightly rotated, meaning 1 end is higher than the other. Then I have to figure out how many degrees to rotate it by trial and error.  How can I make it straight to begin with?

2) Similar to the first question.. Using a tool like "Cut Faces" there's no apparent way to keep it straight. I don't see a way to make a straight line and then use it as the cut face line either.. so I don't know what to do.

In many other 2d type apps the way to keep a straight line is to hold shift. Shift doesn't work here, so what to do?

Thanks for your help.

I'm fairly new myself but I've got a little trick that can help you with the cutting tool.

Just add a "new line" in point edit while the "Y" and "Z" buttons are disabled, this makes it so that your line will be moved in the "X" axis only. Once you have put the line in place where you want it select the cut faces tool, click on one of the vertices of the new line you just made and drag across to the new line until the box turns red. Release the mouse button and it will cut your mesh exactly where you wanted it to. You can also make the line at any angle and you can cut at an angle too.

Look at this screenshot. You can select which axis you want to work with. This should fix some of your problems.

It's circled in yellow.
Hope I helped. :)

anim8or works space is actually 3d environment  just press ctrl and R or click view-port title for a quick view change popup

a way i personally use for parallel editing is i set viewport to view > all then when using move tool with right mouse button held the object or selection will move in the 3rd axis of each view port right mouse also works in 3rd depth with most of anim8or tools

orientation issues ?
menu edit > rotate >rotate none ,this will reset orientation angle
menu edit > locate > locate about origin ,this will move model to centre based by shape of its bounding box

if you use build > join solids this will re-assign the bounding box ,do not use this command unless you have completed editing which require orientation

another way is to double click object and set x-y-z to 0.000 ,every thing you can select has a double click menu in anim8or

2) apart from above info you can enable snap to grid "ctrl and G" button is next to the arc rotate tool menu options > grid ... has snap to grid options
you can just lock each axis just press xyz buttons or hotkey (x)(y) or (z)

does this help !
