Looks really good, you should carry on with this! Get a few renders going. Did you make the rotor blades a separate object, because if you did then you could do a bit of animation!

the intent was total animation

landing gear are separate parts
rotors
gun turret
tail rotors

i'm working on a detailed interior, but it is not finished(which is why the glass is not transparent)

i have a different project i'm working on now that should be finished soon, then i may go back to this

question. how could i make the rotor have a blur as it gets up to speed? just spinning the rotor does not make any motion blur.

awesome model man, you could possibly do a blade animation that is kinda like you see when wheels are spinning where it almost looks like it is going backwards. not sure how to go about that, but I supose you could do an animation where the blades are step by step going backwards literally, but also litteraly going forwards, like walking backwards on a tread-mill.  your feet are stepping backwards but your body is still moving forwards....  it would probably look like its spinning really fast.  idk, try it maybe

u could try making a copy or 2 of your rotor then make it more transparent and stick it in between your blades. i dont know how fast u can get that thing spinning but i think if u try that it might get the illusion ur looking for.

Nice model. Is this from some tutorial? It looks familiar....
The motion blur could be done with some compositing in After effects or some similar program. But If you want to do it in anim8or you can try the methods of sgwan and rellik. Take a good look at a real chopper first and think how you can recreate this in anim8or.

thanks for the tips.

floyd: no, this is an entirely original model based on a real world helicopter. used alot of reference images to get the shape right.

here is a picture of the interior

Maybe it was a tutorial of a similar type of chopper ;)

Kreator: thanks for the link, i had thought that it would be possible to use transmaps and visibility to slowly blur the rotors as it gets up to speed. looking at this particular chopper in flight shows that the rotor makes less blur when at speed than say a 2 bladed prop, which has less visible lines due to the much higher RPMs than a rotor with more blades. in order to make a more defined blur i could render an image of the modeled rotor, and make a few slightly rotated transmaps and then layer them together to make a blur. this could give a bit of depth to the blur when viewed from the edge as well, and a few morphs can give the effects seen by increasing the cyclic(rotating the rotors to give more lift).

Floyd89: i have not seen any tutorials on making a helicopter but maybe i should look for it. might offer a little assistance

i've been making the blur but run into a problem in scene mode, is there any way to make things fade in? if i use the visibility options there is only on or off, no in-between, so i can't have a smooth fade in as the rotor speeds up.

I can do fades in a snap in LightWave, but the straight answer for Anim8or is "NO."  However, I've been able to produce "reasonably-acceptable" fade-in and fade-out results with Anim8or.  Look here: http://www.anim8or.com/smf/index.php?topic=627.0

It has some other ideas --- like using Terranim8or --- too.

okay, I'm just going to try and help. I'm hope this will help but for propellers you make two or three propeller wing things. Thenk make a copy and tilt it. Give the tilted part some transparency. Here is what I'm talking about. Look at the propellers at the ROFLcopter.

and for the animation just keep it still. I think you can do this, try making the propellers flashing. disappearing and reappearing very quickly.

thanks for the assistance all.

with several hours of experimentation i've found that a multiple layered approach looks the best.

for when the rotor is stopped or moving slowly use just the original modelled blades. as the rotor gets faster add in the blurred transmap that still retainst some definition. as it speeds up stretch out the lenght of the blurred area to make it more transparent. increase layers to make the blur more gradual, however this results in many different objects with different transmaps, and the maps take time to make. depends on the quality desired.

here is what i've made so far, if any one of you ever have a 5 bladed rotor and need a motion blur you can use these transmaps. short video to show a low speed rotor, i didn't have the chance to add in the high speed one yet.
