Because i don't have an internet connection, i sometimes take an interesting question home with me to answer, and then post my answer the next day.
I see you now have an answer, but i might as well post this here as well.
Heres 1 way.
Render from anim8or as uncompressed. 400x300
(fastest suitable setting, please see note at bottom of message)
In Sony Vegas, project settings, (properties), try Template settings: NTSC DV 720x480.
If your anim8or video was made at 24fps, change the frame rate in Vegas to 24 as well.
When you have put your anim8or-rendered video onto a sony video-track, right click the video and select 'Video event pan/crop...
Then, in the 'Event pan/crop' window, make sure you are on frame 1 of that clip, and right click the image of the video. Choose 'Match output aspect'.
Cool.
Then, 'File -> Render as', and use the settings listed. (should be same as properties settings).
Thats 1 way, in a nutshell.
You said you wanted to create a 'High quality DVD movie'. The way i've just described will give you a good quality, and i think would be a good place for you to start.
Getting the best possible quality is reliant on a variety of factors, like available drive space, (uncompressed files can be many GB in size), computer power, (will your PC do it, and how long are you willing to wait), and Available Codecs etc...
For some hands on understanding, heres something you could try.
Render some video as i've described above.
Then, render the same piece of video, but with these extra settings:
After you go File -> render as, click on the custom button. In the 'Video Rendering Quality' box, choose 'Best'.
Then, click on the video tab at the bottom of the same window, go to 'Video Format', and choose 'Uncompressed'.
Try that. You may be surprised at the difference in size and rendertime.
And here's the kicker.
After seeing your 1.5GB video coming out as an 11GB video, now you've got to somehow fit it onto a 4.75GB DVD.!!!
So you're back to the compression thing anyway.

Note concerning Anim8or movie render: As you know, you can set the image size of the video render in Anim8or. For the best quality, you would set your anim8or render to the same size as your Vegas render.
But just try the default 400x300 first. Again, its all a compromise, but i find that 400x300 does the job really, really well.
