Missing Shadow
« on: September 13, 2009, 06:20:19 pm »

Hey all,

I have a little issue with the shadows in my latest project I started today.

As you can see in the image, there are no shadows under the curved mesh, everything else is casting/receiving shadows properly.

Everything is one object, so I don't see why it would treat one mesh differently from another.

I will attach the file as well.

It's not missing, $imon, it's just that the roofline is occluding the rays from the light!  Move the light a bit closer to the camera and you'll see the shadows just fine!

Thanks for replying Rudy, but I'm afraid that isn't the problem.. The light angle was a bit weird in that first picture, but as you can see in this one, there is no shadow under it (actually, this render shows weird dark artifacts.)

you might want to try making the curved part a seperate object. i would think the building would be stationairy if you were making an animation. i havent done much lighting but from what i saw from some of your renders you know what your doing.

if all else fails just use a different renderer.

That's a bit of an odd one, $imon.  Aside from what has already been suggested, the only thing I can suggest is to ensure your faces are the right way around, and it might be worth ensuring the corrugated section doesn't quite intersect with the underlying part, but leaves a very small gap.

Purely as an experiment, it might be worth separating the objects as Rellik420 suggests and see what happens.  If the result is the same, try replacing the corrugated section with a straight plank, and gradually increase the complexity of the corrugations until the problem occurs again (or doesn't).  Those artifacts look an awful lot like something trying to be shadows, so the problem might relate to the complexity of the corrugated section.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions!,
I already tried making it a seperate object in scene mode, without any luck.. =(

The faces are the right way around too. So I started remodeling the corrugated part, first one 'wave', that gave a shadow (yay!), then i copied it and welded it to the first one, still worked with shadows.. after a while i had like 6 waves and added another 6, thats when it stopped giving shadows. So what I did is just have a few seperate pieces of 6 waves each and just place them next to each other, without actually joining the solids.

That gave almost a good result, still some artifacts, so I changed the lighting from a local to an infinite light source, and raised the corrugated part a bit from the underlying beam.. that solved the problem completely for my case.

I still don't know why it won't just work when i join the solids to one big piece..

Thanks for all the help though guys, a million more roof tiles to come so I hope anim8or can get rid of the shadow bugs sometimes :)

Well done working through that problem, $imon, nicely done.  I have no idea why the issue is there, but you have demonstrated that it is clearly a bug as opposed to incorrect usage.  Could I suggest copying the relevant parts of this to the bug thread?

Hmmm...

Well, I've still got v0.95, and the shadow renders fine for me!  So, perhaps there is a bug related to v0.97.

I'm pretty sure it's a v0.97 problem, since simon is rendering it with ART ;)
