« on: February 10, 2008, 05:52:47 pm »

Hi, Im fairly new to anim8tor and im not sure how to point edit. I have read the manual on point editing and followed the instructions but when I change from select mode to point edit mode my  object just deselects and I cant do anything to it. If you could help on this matter it would be much appeciated. :)

I guess I know where the problem is...

Have you converted it to mesh? If not, select the object and click "Build>Convert to mesh" before you enter the point edit mode...

See Mesh vs. Parametric shape chapter in the manual for more explanation

I'm guessing your problem is that you haven't configured the GUI in anim8or.  To do this, go "file>configure GUI"  You then want to check everything except "smooth outline", "smooth points".  You may want to have the grid on or off, that's your preference of course.  If you haven't done this, I'm guessing you also haven't configured the view preferences, you can change these by going "view>preferences"

Ok, let's try it step by step:

1. You have an object converted to mesh:

2. Switch to Point edit mode. The object deselects and the editable points should be visible if you are in wireframe view (if not, see the "configure GUI" box as hiho recommended):

3. Try to select some points:

4. When the points are selected, it will be possible to move them etc.:

If this doesn't help, tell me what point did you get stuck on... and maybe posting an image would help :)

Good luck

GeniusAtWork --- I'm guessing the primary reason your object de-selects is because you've inadvertently made it a Group (of objects).  You can only edit ONE mesh at a time in Anim8or.  This fact can actually be handy when you've got several complex meshes near each other.  By selecting one or more objects and clicking Build > Group..., you can essentially prevent any changes to it (them) in Point Edit mode.

I suggest that (in Object Edit mode) you select the object(s) you want to edit and click Build > Ungroup (or use the "u" hotkey).  If you've grouped more than one time, you may have to repeat the Build > Ungroup process until the object(s) you want to edit are completely ungrouped.

By the way, rather than using Build > Group, the way to combine meshes into one mesh is to select the two or more objects and click Build > Join Solids.

Also, by the way, a screen shot of what you're working with, like Kubajzz's example above, does wonders for conveying information for others to interpret.

Hope this helps...
