anim8or crashes when faces are subdivided
« on: May 21, 2009, 06:25:02 pm »

Symptom:
Anim8or v0.97d crashes with no error message: its window simply disappears.

To reproduce:
Load torus.an8 which is included in the attached zip file
switch to point-edit mode
select all faces
select Edit/Subdivide faces (U)

Anim8or disappears without even a *poof*

The zip file includes some comments about how the torus was created.

What are your computer spec, because I wasn't able to reproduce it.

My computer specs are:
Dual Core 2.66GHz
4GB DDR2 1066MHz Dual Channel RAM
NVIDIA 9500GT 1GB

It crashes here too. I think it's a memory problem. I currently rendering a scene in 3d max which eats all my RAM. I will try it later on when it's done rendering.
Also the strange thing about your torus is that all the faces face the wrong way. Select all faces and you will see there blue, hit shift+N (flip normals) to get the front of the faces.

My computer specs:

3.4GHz P4-550, 1GB ECC memory, 4GB page file, WinXP Pro SP3 with Internet Explorer 8 (IE8 replaces system dlls)
256MB Nvidia GeForce 7800 GTX, ForceWare v182.50

It crashes when Anim8or is the only program running, and I've used Anim8or with much larger meshes, so I don't think it's directly related to memory capacity.
I'm aware of the reversed normals. Flipping them makes no difference for this problem.
Please read the included txt file.

It's not a memory problem indeed. You did something really strange with it.
When i read your txt file it seems like you made it yourself really hard creating the torus. There is a torus plugin available which is way easier.
You can download it here: http://anim8or.com/scripts/tyson_collins/torus_plugin.a8s

floyd,

I created the torus manually so that the surface texture could be applied correctly.

Bent and merged solids should not be able to crash Anim8or.

I believe it may have something to do with your computers, as I as well could not get it to crash.
