materials on glass... problem
« on: May 07, 2009, 02:41:03 am »

In making my infamous cola bottle, I have come upon a problem.

I made a label, and many thanks to Hector for helping me with trans-maps, etc...

But when I apply the the label to the bottle, the transparent areas show the glass as being much lighter/clearer than the surrounding glass... as shown here:

Is there a way to make it match the rest of the glass, and be darker?

Note, the label has not been adjusted to fit perfectly... this was just a test to see if the transparency effect works.  Also, this was run without anti-aliasing for the sake of saving time.

I think the problem is, that the transparency of the transmap is not effected by the ART attributes. The other glass is effected and refracts/reflects the surroundings. The label does not. I think a label without the transparency will look better.

I assigned the "dielectric" and "IOR" and the whole label turned black!  :(

I have a suggestion. With your model simply make a copy of it. After doing such, take the copy and cut out the area of the surface of the bottle that your trans map is applied. After doing this, and make sure you only cut out the surface area with the trans map on it!, Loop cut around the cut area that you made around the trans map. Now delete the top and bottom remaining parts of the bottle. Now select the faces on the cut selection that still has the trans map on it. Now zoom in, and multi. extrude the faces slightly, just barely. And once this is done. un-select the faces. Zoom back out, and drag it over to where the label should be on the original bottle which just re-apply the glass material to. Now it should apeare as the label is on the bottle. Make sure that the trans map is set so that it is completely transparent. Now when rendering, make sure that you make sure that the "new label mesh" cannot cast shadows.

Any way have fun and I hope my write up helps. If you need any further help or explanation just ask.

If I follow you right, that's pretty much what I decided to do.  I copied the bottle with the label... then I cut that bottle copy down to the general area of the label... Located the label at the same place on the original bottle, and increased scaled 1.01 so it would show on the surface, and not be somehow stuck or possibly hidden in the original bottle glass.

Result is this:

Also, I kept the black and white trans-map, but replaced the original color logo with a sheet of the yellow-orange-white swirl background. That way I didn't have to try and re-align the color-label's lettering with the trans-map...

And, looks like it works fine!

Thanks all for your input!

aww thanks, Nate!  I can't get over just how real that thing came out looking!

Thanks all who made the effort, made the comments in the glass making forum, and here.... I almost want to reach through the screen and pop off the lid!

Now if only I could make droplets of water on it.... ~grin~
