How Do I Create A 3d enviornment
« on: November 08, 2008, 02:33:11 pm »

Hey I'm trying to model a city for a project I'm working on but I don't know how create a proper 3d enviornment. I tried creating a large sphere and putting a sky texture on it but it came out badly. How would you simulate a large, open atmosphere for a city?? ???

The method you mentions is a good way to create environments. Use a sphere and apply an environment map to it.
Or add an environment in scene mode, read more about it here:

The panorama idea isn't bad but I have some shots that reveal the background color past the panorama (plus I want to learn more about sphere enviornment maps).
I want to learn how to use a sphere to properly create an enviornment map. When I tried and did test renders, the sky texture was horibbly stretched and it was obvious that my city was in a giant sphere. I want to know how to get rid of this problem and give the illusion that the city is in a large open space with an atmosphere. Is there any specific tutorials or tips on this?

Try one of these skies on your hemisphere, Use the HDRI ones rather than the panoramics or ordinary images ones There are two HDRI Skies with an H on them right click and download then apply to your hemisphere

You can also use a cubemap in two ways.

Either you can use the built-in cubemap texture tool for the background (Settings>Environment)
Or, make a cubemap texture and apply it to the sphere.  That way you wont get stretching.
