Hey :) Sorry to be away so long  8) Been packing up an art exhibition we just had...

I'll post the review when I find it.....

Raxx: that's funny about my face, that third eye just grew a few years ago, I woke up one morning, and my wife was looking at me a bit oddly..... Thanks for the advice about the arm! And it's interesting that you prefer the first angle (thanks for the opinion), so I will revisit that! I can see your point about having the elf face the camera. Gives a POV to the viewer....

Thanks  Spicy: I've made a few birds ( so to speak) and a transmap mostly softens the hard edges and makes it look more 'realistic'.... I hope :)

Hey headwax, where do you get the time to model all this, or alternatively, how do you model so fast? It's incredible really.
On your eagle model: on the legs, there's 6 edges connecting to one point, and it's making the shading come out weird (that or the UV Mapping came out wrong), and I would really recommend fixing it  And keep up the good work.

Time, well I get into a lot of trouble for spending my day at the computer,,, but I enjoy it. The models come out fast mind you, as anim8or is so well designed! Thanks for the point about the verticies ... 6 edges joining to one. I have problems coming down from a detailed part of a mesh (like a finger/hand, then joiningg it up with eg the wrist, as one part of the mesh needs a lot more detail than the next. Appreciate any advice on this anyone....

Falloffalot: thanks I appreciate your kind comment. ;D

What you want here is different methods to terminate edge loops.  A great example of what I mean is here (the comparison of the two spheres partway down the page.)
http://maxrovat.sns.hu/subdiv/subdivmodeling.htm
As you can see there are particular patterns you can use to help change the direction of edge loops.
Here's another good method: http://www.astahost.com/Edgeloop-Termination-t19219.html
(for that method you can skip steps 3-5 and simply merge the two triangular faces created to get a result as in step 6.)
Basically the last method turns a loop around, circling back into another one.
I hope that helps!

well a while ago i signed up for a learning contest at carrara louge, the idea was to illustrate the idea "Seven". So I put up my entry as something to do with Snow White. I can't remember the rules but the idea is to learn how to use some aspect of carrara and show that you have learnt something....

today I tried to polish up my image. I rendered the trident and the sign on an alpha background, then pasted them into the main render via photoshop, erasing bits and bobs to make them sit better and then adding a few shadows. The beard is plastered onto a sphere which is inside the elf's head.

in phot0shop I copied some of his leather jacket and applied the copy over the shoes on the ground, then made the layer a multiply layer, then dropped the opacity till some of the original shoes showed through

the forest of course is a textured applied to a plane or two, the leaves are transmaps over a gridded plane which I bent at random angles...

I think this will be my entry....

software: blacksmith 3d paint , anim8or, carrara, photoshop, uvmapper pro, I sourced a BVH file of someone sitting on a high chair, filtered it through truspace, then bent the skeleton to fit my elf, then spent an hour tweaking the hands, legs and arms etc because the BVh file went nutty :)

edit: just figured how to do a depth pass then combine it with an adjustment layer mask in photoshop, so the second image has a slight DOF

any c and c appreciated between the two images

well now, ,,,

I started working on some paraphenalia to flesh out the character...

I tool me about three hours to texture this book, maybe I am getting anal

I used a table found in king tut's tomb for my inspiration, now making the bookshelf etc,,

anim8or meshes of course, uvmapper pro , a few adjustments like the centre of the candle flames and the shadow under the pipe were made in photoshop elements, alos  I erased one of the leopard's feet cause I stuffed the pose up :)

the scene has about seven lights, I tried to make all the objects overlap in one way to add depth to the render.... the metal things on the cabinet are transmaps on cyls

edit:
see http://www.cgtextures.com/

texture source I find on the net http://www.beiz.jp/

rocks made with that excellent rock plugin, thankyou who ever made it!

using depth passs

Here is what I discovered for photoshop elements 3 but should work in six

via Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels

1) place this adjustment layer mask between the two layers  you want to combine

2) select the top layer (in this case the layer you have blurred which is a blurred copy of the background layer) and hit ctrl g, this will attach it to the layer mask

3) click on the layer mask and do alt click, this will hide everything except the layer mask, then you can paste whatever into it!

4) Open up your depth channel pass in a seperate document, select all, copy it, then go back to the first document and paste it into layer mask...

5) I think you then click on another layer in the layers windows at bottom right and you will see the result

6) Adjust effect by varying the opacity of the adjustment layer (?)

Hehe, that troll looks like he's been in a few fights, wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley.
Awesome work!

I L-O-V-E your work, I'm was wondering; are you going to make a movie of all the things or just for some awesome pictures.

(ps, the troll looks extraordinary awesome, but imo it's a bit to 'human')

Thanks very much 3dJoe, Onespirit and Jehovahenker :)

I was waiting till I had some more work to post before I replied ... but its on the home computer.

Hah, I admit for a troll he is a little too human, but I tried to ugly him up so he could be my live in maid ....

Well perhaps live in bodyguard.

I checked out a lot of Norwegian troll pics before I did him, but made him from memory.

As far as animation, I made a small walk one last night for fun, that I'll post, So you can see his body moving.

But these characters will go in a book if I can keep my motivation long enough. So I am aiming for a certain feeling in the renders, kind of old fashioned and less CG maybe.

That might come with post work?

thanks again

well I made the body, rigged the troll and have come up with something untrollike hah!

That's okay.

Here's some renders, the unadulterated one, the photoshopped one using the depth pass and a moon addede

then a slight pastel effect

anim8or mesh, carrara renders, photoshop photoshopping

not happy with the fish in the hand, the eyes on the trolll realling aren;t clear enough, must fix the face textures to reduce the variance in tone

c and c welcome

have worked up a stone bridge which I was hoping would go with the render eventually, trolls living under bridges....

cheers
