A short project-wip
« on: December 26, 2008, 06:24:18 am »

Hi,

Just started working on a short film using anim8or.  Hope to get enough time to complete it.

I experimented with a scene today.

It's a nice scene, the only suggestion I have is try and move your camera a bit to the right of the image.

Close-up mountains, like the one in the foreground do not tend to look good so it's better to give them less space and show more of the good-looking mountains. ;)

You are right.  In fact, the scene is yet not final.  In the actual scene, the camera will move like aerial photography and I will take due care not to go too close to expose the texture stretch.

Looking really good now. You've deffinatly improved on this second image and the sea looks pretty good. Only thing i would say is to make your textures more detailed. You could do this in several way dependant on how you want things to work. For example for the sea you could use just one very large texture map and apply this along with a bumpmap. Another option would be to save memory by making a smaller texture map but this time making it seamless (programs such as photoshop or Gimp can do this for you, you may also be able to find free plugins for various programs as well). By making it seamless you can repeat the texture over and over without having to create a massive texture map.
Making the textures is another area where there are different methods. you can either find several textures and try to use these in your texture map by using brushes in a paint program to apply them. I've also tried another method in gimp where you generate a randomised colour map with lots of different colours. Next you adjust the colours to suit your needs, in this case maybe a dark green or browny green for grass. Next you generate another map over the top to add another layer to add further detail and change the layer properties to darken or lighten ( i can't remember exactly but just experiment a bit) and again change it to another landscape colour. What you end up with is a very natural looking landscape which is totally random and looks very fitting with the landscape. You may have to make adjustments in particular spots say for a rocky area you may have to select the area you want and generate a map only in the selected area. Its quite hard to explain exactly how to do everything but i hope i've given you some ideas and help if you needed it. If you get stuck with it just ask. Also to give an example of the texture map i got out of it heres a landscape i used with it.

Thanks for your suggestions.  I really appreciate that.  In fact, in the movie the above scene will be just a camera pan.  In close-up shots, you will more realistic grass, ground, and trees.  Working on it.  Hope to post a few images soon.

Very nicely done. Maybe a little light (no extra shadows) in front of the cabin door to show more of the details.

I think you are right lynn.  The front of the cabin is too dark.

This is another render, reasonably illuminated.

Really nice render, i like the lighting. Really the lighting you would expect in a tropical forest. The use of textures is pretty good too, only some stretching on the side of the wood. The trees could use some work, the texture now doesn't really fit. Same goes for the background, try to make the house more blend in the surroundings.

Good work, keep it going.

Hi everybody thanks for your suggestions.  I wanted to use some fire in this project.  I worked on creating one.

Here is the link for a short clip.  C&C welcome.
