Help with anim8or skinning/bone influence
« on: October 20, 2008, 10:46:15 am »

Hi,

I am a new member to this forum.  I just made my first walk cycle with a human figure.  However, when i tried to enable skinning and changed to Sequence mode, the anim8or crashed.

Please suggest remedies.

Thanks.

Hi Indian8or, I suggest you to detail something, in order to get your problem fixed:

- version of Anim8or you are using
- complete list of steps to reproduce the crash (such as "open file test.an8, switch to sequence mode, click on the skinning tool button" and so forth)
- attach your .an8 file to a post (to do that, select "Additional Options.." beneath the message, while posting).

With the steps above you'll help Steve debugging Anim8or and hence you'll help all the users - including yourself ;-)

If you aren't comfortable sharing your file on the forum, send it to Steve's e-mail.

Greetings and welcome!

Thanks Francesco for the quick reply.

Here are the steps that lead to crash:

1)I made a humanoid model with different objects for different parts like head, hands, trunk, etc.
2)I rigged the model in a figure editor.
3)I tried to enable skinning for a part of the model.
4)Then I changed to Sequence mode to make a sequence.
5)Anim8or displayed a message "illegal operation".

The details of the error are as follows:

ANIM8OR caused an invalid page fault in
module ANIM8OR.EXE at 018f:004a45b8.

I use anim8or version 0.95.
I used windows 98 SE op system.

Very good, now download version 0.97d and check if it crashes the same way. My help reaches here, now you have to wait for Steve.

Why do you need to change to Sequence mode when you hav`nt skinned the character yet? are you jumping ahead of yourself?

Skinning is done in figure Mode. as the bones are linked to the Body of the character. You don`t need to switch to seq mode until you have skinned it and set bone limits.

Is the character One entire mesh, or is it separate objects ? If so you don`t need to skin it.

I think a ref image of your problem will reveal more

Kreator if you read carefully you will notice that Indian8or did skin it in figure mode before going to sequence mode. Anyway the point here is the crash.

Indian8or make your test with the latest version and post here the results, maybe the problem you are experiencing is already fixed in 0.97d, if not, be fully detailed with your report and don't forget to provide Steve with your .an8 file (here or by mail, as you prefer).

That would be good if you try several times to see if the crash happens always, and to see if the reported error is always the same. Another thing you should try is to open the file in the latest version, save it with another name, close the program, restart it and try opening (and skinning) the new file, always with the latest version.

Not sure if it's the case right here, but some programs are able to fix errors in old files, when opened and saved with newer versions.

Francesco: I do read VERY carefully....

2)I rigged the model in a figure editor.
Quote
3)I tried to enable skinning for a part of the model.
4)Then I changed to Sequence mode to make a sequence.
5)Anim8or displayed a message "illegal operation".

I don`t see where it actually says he skinned it,  the operative words are "I tried" telling me that he did`nt i!

I am wondering whether the crash occurred for some other reason , ie: were bone limits set? is the mesh attached to the bones ? are they separate objects? how big is the file ? did he run out of ram?

I think you're right Kreator, seems like he didn't actually skin it, sticking to the wording. We'll see. Sorry if I seemed rude with my phrase, of course that wasn't my purpose.
