Adding text to a video

Hey Everyone,

I'm trying to make a video, with text explanations on the side of certain scenes.  currently i'm creating an object for every text I want  and putting that text in front of the camera for the scenes that need a text.  is there an easier way to do this?

do you mean like subtitles, because thats easy to make with any video editing program, you could use  Windows movie maker

yeah like subtitles, or anywhere on the page.  I just took a quick glance at Windows movie maker, it seems that the program only allows you to add titles, you can't change the physical location of the text relative to the camera.  and you can't add lines to point to certain objects.  Although I am liking the transition ability of the movie maker, thanks for that suggestions.  Is there some part of the program that i need to understand more before i can add texts in random locations?

any other suggestions, or other programs that may help?

i'm not sure about any freeware program that'll do what you're after, but if you're serious about video production then it might be a good idea to shell out for a more advanced editor, eg. adobe premiere (haven't used it but i've heard it's good), or Ulead MediaStudio Pro, which is the one i use.  MSP can do all sorts of overlay effects, including randomly-positioned text etc.  downside is that the latest version costs about £200, though...  :P

movie maker can add sub titles under the video. go to titles and credits and select add title to selected clip. type in your text then choose change title animation. go to the top and select subtitles and you are done. as far as lines pointing to things. you can take a picture of that frame and take it into any paint program and draw the line with whatever text and bring it back into the video, but in movie maker it will have to be its own clip because movie maker doesn't do video overlays, unless you do a overlay transition. but that wouldn't look to good.
